Although I read lots of "spiritual" books and lots of "alien" books, I was not prepared to like this book. The premise seemed a bit far fetched. Alien spirit beings inhabiting the body of a man on a quest through the Himalayas is even a little too out there for my taste. However, once I got just a few pages into the book and I grew accustomed to the narrator referring to himself as "we," I started underlining and highlighting passages. This is a small book, only 188 pages, is packed full of spiritual insights which one would expect to read in much lengthier and more classical sacred texts. Not only did I feel I came away from the book with a better outlook, I feel as if I have become close friends with the narrator(s). This book will be read many times and will take a special spot on my bedside table next to my worn copy of the Gita. There are two great meditation exercises near the end of the book which I look forward to trying (pages 143-145, 166-168).
It is irrelevant to believe or disbelieve in the entities inhabiting our narrator. The reader does not need any understanding of neither Hindi philosophies nor a belief in alien life. The message of the book is to lead the reader on a journey to become a happier and healthier being. I have studied the basic premise of this book in many other texts, but none have touched me quite the way this book has. I look forward to more work by Phoenix Desmond and friends.

A Be-ing Experience

This must be one of the most unusual books I have ever read. On the back cover, there is an account of beings from Sirius who have travelled to Earth to share a prophecy.."a set of vibrations.... that will initiate a return to the awareness of unity, which will harmonize life on this planet". Reading this, I assumed that the book would be something on the lines of books written by Patricia Cori, or even Barbara Marciniak. The rather unusual title of the book also made me wonder whether it would be too New Age-y even by my standards..
Having read the book (and re-read it as well), I can completely dispel the notion that it is New Age-y in any way.I can also say that it has very little in common with either Patricia Cori, or Barbara Marciniak's works, at least not in the contents. This book is an account of a journey that the author undertakes in the Himalayas, carrying only a small bag containing a notebook, two pens, a change of shirt and a blanket to keep warm. No money, not even for food.
The author's narrative is in the first person plural, it probably refers to his many selves. But that is not the only strange fact about this narrative. Every thing, living or nonliving, are to him, a manifestation of consciousness. Heavy boulders are referred to as "stone people", thus attributing them, a sentience, all their own.
The author mentions a lot of Babas (renunciates in India) and his interaction with them. Most were intrigued and curious about him, for they took him to be a "foreign" baba. There are other incidents too, not all positive. For instance, there was an incident when the author takes off his shoes to give them to another, who he believed, needed them more. There are also times when the author looks into the suffering minds of certain people, and, from a distance, proffers silent, psychic comfort. At the end of each interaction, the author pens a short commentary of his interpretation of the event.
This way of living without resistance to What Is, is perhaps the most important feature of this book. The giving and taking freely in the world, in the Now, while holding his own and without compromising his dignity in the process.That it is at all possible, is a blinding realization for souls driven primarily by fear. My personal guess is that this book is the experience of the Now of a being with strong Sirian connections, offering the results of a pre-digested experience.
I also believe that this book is an account of a journey on several cognitive levels. It is a clear pointer to humanity to redefine our relation with Mother Earth and reinvest our trust in Her Love for us. I am not too certain how the title and cover picture fit in with the overall contents of the book. But maybe that is when my analytical faculties could benefit from a timeout.
This book is relatively light reading and yet touches something tremendously profound, some unknown threads of my being. Read it to see if it touches you in the same way.

Profound messages within

Phoenix Diamond's Make Love to the Universe may not appeal to everyone, but it should. I have to admit that after I received my review copy I set it aside, not able to connect with its premise of the author "forming a pact with spirits from Sirius, allowing them to enter his body." I would pick it up from time to time, wanting to read it but unable to get past the premise.
Finally, I realized I simply needed to adopt the fiction reader's attitude of suspended disbelief. That was the key. Once I started reading the book, I could barely put it down. It is truly filled with universal truths that resonated with my head, heart and soul because I have always felt an affinity for these spiritual beliefs.
These truths transcend any organized religion in that they form the essential core of all religions without the dogma of any one religious faith. The messages of simplicity, trust, openness, and connection with all life are timeless, ageless and can stand alone or with any organized religion.
There is joy in this book. There is hope as well. It underscores the importance of self-knowledge, self-love and love for life, all living creatures and the earth itself. This is not "new age" material. It is ancient truth we have either forgotten or turned away from in favor of rituals and myths that make us fear and try to manipulate our behavior and responses towards other people and the environment. The messages here have no fear attached, no self-loathing or exclusion of "the other." Phoenix transmits simplicity in our view of our inner and outer world because it is through simple kindness towards ourselves, one another and the earth that we live upon and in that we find peace and, yes, love.
How much kinder we would be, how much safer and healthier we would be if we remembered these truths and incorporated even a few of them into out daily experience of living. Who cares whether Phoenix Diamond or spirits from Sirius are voicing them. I doesn't matter whether you accept or reject the creation story of the author(s). It matters only that you read this book because as Phoenix writes in the Preface, you ". . . absorb only that which resonates" and are free "to discard the rest." The truth will only speak to you if you are awake, and if asleep, will awaken you only if you are ready to accept it. Simple message, simple faith, but a beautiful experience. Read this book even if you, like me, are somewhat of a skeptic because if you are drawn to it, even out of curiosity, you may discover you needed it. Trust your impulse.
Though I did seem to stumble over the author's use of the royal We as he spoke for the spirits from Sirius, I realized the more into the book I read the less it mattered whether he truly believed that these spirits inhabited his body or whether it was a stylist choice used to write about his beliefs and experiences. I recommend this book to anyone interested in considering an alternative viewpoint of how we interact with one another and the earth and all its diverse inhabitants. I am glad I did not put it aside, and am grateful for having been given the privilege of reviewing it through Library Thing. I am also grateful that a small publisher, Wolf Trail Press, took a chance on this book because it is only through courageous independent publishers that we can find books such as this. They believed in this book, and now I, a reader reluctant to begin it, do as well.
