Excellent introduction for the researcher.

Very complete and interesting, this book is aimed to the graduate student or the researcher that wants to delve into this subject. It is the perfect starting point for people interested in beginning research in the physics of gaseous nebulae and active galactic nuclei. Obviously, since some effort is required to the reader, due to the complexity of the matters treated, some background in mathematics and physics is required to get the best out of it

I could never get into this book.

Perhaps it was just the professor, but I could never get into this book. I think its hopelessly boring, and like alot of graduate textbooks in astro, it has a TERRIBLE index. You can't find anything you need in terms of numbers or equations with the index, you must read the book cover to cover to know where something is.
It also has way too many numbers scattered in tables, and you must read the chapter to know what assumptions were made when he calculated those numbers. Our entire class had such a difficult time with homework using this book that I doubt any of us would give a good review of the book.
My own research is in AGN, and for the most part he does OK in explaining them but he can confuse you in comparing them.

The book describes how to construct and analyze dynamic mathematical models of engineering systems. Constructing such models involves the development of time-varying differential equations. Specifically, the development and analysis of lumped parameter, linear ordinary differential equations with constant coefficients. Such equations are often used to describe the dynamic behavior of engineering systems found in studies of feedback controllers, vibrations, and many other engineering systems.

You will learn how to develop these equations and how to solve them numerically and analytically. I take a very basic approach in my explanations. That is, I start with basic physics and develop elemental describing equations of three fundamental building blocks contained in almost all engineering systems. You will discover that electrical, mechanical, fluid and thermal systems all look alike mathematically. This is important because math model construction and analysis techniques developed in one field of engineering (like electrical engineering) can then be used in other engineering fields such as mechanical, fluid and thermal. It's also important because many engineering systems involve electrical, mechanical, fluid and thermal dynamics. Using case studies, I show how to develop and use these math models in such multidisciplinary practical applications.

Unlike many text books on this subject, I explain each step in details in order to make the material simple and easy to understand. Past customers reviews appear to indicate that my teaching methods work. I assume at the start that you have a fairly good grounding in algebra and trigonometry. A course in calculus would be useful, but f you have not had a course or if you calculus is "rusty", I provide a review of calculus fundamentals in Appendix A. It is not necessary to have had a course in differential equations. I provide a solid course in applied ordinary differential equations as you work through the book.

Excellent approach from a general engineering point of view.

Given that I designed an undergraduate course about engineering modelling for the students in a program on Engineering Systems and Informatics, I looked around and around for a book that spoke about the subject from a general point of view, and not from the particular of any of the specialities.

I have found that Jack Lewis's book is exactly what I was looking for. It is written in a plain language; mathematics are accessible for first semester engineering undergraduate students; it is complete; and it is up to date in this age of informatics. For this reason I have adopted it as the text book for the course that I offer.

What Lewis has done is to approach the engineering modelling problem from a systemic point of view.

Excellent review reference for professional engineers

In preparation to take the Professional Engineeringexamination, I stumbled across this book. As I paged through it, Ifelt comfortable that the author was an expert in the material, and communicated to me in the method I prefer--clear diagrams, drawings, equations, and crisp text. The use of modelling showed me a new way to understand and apply basic engineering principles. I finally had a competent mentor for applying engineering principles to real life. My only wish is that the author write more books on applied engineering!

Teaching the history of math to kids really gives them a deeper appreciation of the subject. I have even developed projects from this book. This is a great tool to begin with.
