Great book to help train your new dog

This is a great book of tips to train a dog. I recently helped a friend train her new puppy and used this book as well as training I previously went through with my baby, Sophie. A good resource.

More pamphlet than book

Some of this information was very good. Repetition and hand signals are very important when training a dog. A dog should be allowed to use an alert bark, they can do that without you telling them to bark. They should be taught, with hand signals, to stop as soon as you tell them to stop. You have to be consistent! I don't agree with all of the training, however. You should NEVER jerk a dog when walking on a leash!! You can damage their throat! To train, walk on a short leash, when they pull, turn them around and take a couple of steps, then turn back to the original direction. Use whatever word you like, I use heel, and praise them if the quit pulling and walk beside you. You might have to repeat several times, but if you are consistent they will get it.

I am attending dog training classes and this information goes along nicely with what the instructor is teaching us. I look forward to not having my dog pull the leash!

A Good Remedial Guide

Japanese for Professionals has proved to be an ideal book for me. I have 4 years of formal Japanese study and lived in Japan for 2 years. However, over the past 5 years I have not been using Japanese. This book is helping me review and practice for potential work in Japan. Just what I need to get back on track.
If you do not have extensive experience in Japanese (understand how to read kanji, etc.) this book may be too advanced. Even still, it provides good vocabulary explanations, so you may be able to use it.
Content covers all the basics, such as formal introductions, as well as helpful ideas for document writing and the like.

Intermediate and Advanced Learners Will Find It Useful

The Association for Japanese-Language Teaching produced Japanese for Professionals as a textbook for the classroom, but I think it works pretty well for self-study too.

Twelve Situations with an opening dialogue, vocabulary, essential expressions (my favorite part for review), example dialogues, and practice (hardly use this at all for self-study). The focus is on speaking.

-Confirmation
-Requests
-Negative Requests
-Refusals
-Laying the Groundwork (a proposal--truncated without essential expressions!)
-Negotiation
-After Five (another one without essential expressions)
-The Japanese Employment System (truncated chapter that could have used more content, especially the essential expressions)

SUMMARY

The vocabulary and expressions are useful, explained well, and put into many different contexts so that you become familiar with them. It is a great book to have handy if you are an intermediate student headed into the business world, or an advanced one wanting to review. It would have been perfect if it had come with a CD!

A Book for Business Japanese

For every student of Japanese their comes the time where you are looking for some more advanced textbooks to handle business Japanese. This book helps with good text examples and clauses and if you work in a company you will have to cover topics like introduction, telephone calls, asking and requesting and the book will help to fill those gaps. The vocabulary in each section help to encourage the learning and the English explanations making sure to understand the context and therefore it is a good bridge between an advanced Japanese book and a standard learning book. A prerequisite is that you should be able to recognize an amount of kanjis otherwise it takes far more time to work through this book. I hope for the next revision of this book the publisher will make a CD available.

Basic reference on partitions and q-series

This is *the* classic and most essential reference on the theory of partitions and related q-series written by the leading authority on the subject. It requires almost no technical prerequisites, starts from scratch, and proceeds in a very clear and orderly manner towards some of the more elaborate aspects of the subject. If you (plan to) work on this subject, buy it.
The book was written in 1976, and as such does not cover the more recent developments, though the bibliography has been updated (to a limited degree) for the current 1998 paperback edition. However, after all these years, it remains *the* introduction to the subject (with the possible exception of chapter 14 on computational methods, which is definitely outdated), and can be supplemented only by Gaspar and Rahman's 'Basic Hypergeometric Series'. I taught a higher undergraduate level course based on chapters 1, 2, 3, 7 and 9, and my students definitely found these chapters to be highly readable.
My one and only complaint is to Cambridge University Press: Dover has shown that paperbacks can be produced in such a way that they can be opened completely flat without being damaged, and quite cheaply too. Why can't you adopt the same technology?

A beautiful struggle

This is a very rich guide to the ruins of Pompeii. The author is, without doubt, a scholar of distinction. The reconstructive drawings are second to none. The layout of the book is beautiful. However, as an introduction to the subject, the book is a struggle. The writing is often turgid, burdened with unnecessary archaeological terminology: The hip bone is connected to the peristyle, the peristyle is connected to the pronaos, the pronaos is connected to the portico, the chalcidicum is connected to the knee bone.... The glossary at the end of the book is hopelessly inadequate - a mere afterthought. The publishers would do well to study the DK Pulishing model and invest the book with a few introductory pages explaining the vast terminology employed throughout the work with architectural diagrams and arrows. It might then be a masterpiece.
