Chang is the author of The Passion Plan: A Step-by-Step Guide to Discovering, Developing, and Living Your Passion (2000). He also heads his own "performance improvement consulting, training, and publishing firm," and he has written other books on benchmarking, measuring organizational and team improvement, meeting planning, and problem solving. In The Passion Plan, Chang laid down seven steps for unlocking the passion that he says is already "a part of [everyone]" to have a more meaningful life. Chang now suggests that what works for the individual can be applied to organizations, as he adapts the same seven steps for the workplace. Using passionate organizations such as MindSpring, Southwest Airlines, and Ben and Jerry's as examples to demonstrate what passion is, he describes the benefits of organizational passion. Afterwards he examines "how organizations lose sight of passion." How "Passion-Driven" Is Your Organization?

In the Foreword, Frederick W. Smith (chairman and CEO of FedEx) suggests that "Successful leaders of the future will have to tap into the tremendous potential passion offers them. In fact, despite the advances in both physical networks and information networks, that drive the high-tech and high-speed New Economy, successful leaders must invest in a third and vital network -- a passionate people network that sparks the ideas and innovation for lasting success." In his previous work (The Passion Plan), Chang offers a step-by-step process by which an individual can discover, develop, and live the passion to which Smith refers. In this volume, Chang shifts his attention to what Smith characterizes as a "passionate people network", explaining how each and every person involved in an organization "has the potential to strengthen and improve performance. And when passion is involved the possibility that the changes will spread increases exponentially." Human history is filled with countless examples of passionate people who inspired others to join then in achieving seemingly impossible goals. In today's business world, according to Collins and Porras In Built to Last, they could be called Big Hairy Audacious Goals (BHAGs). Point is, without a passionate commitment by those involved, achieving lasting and significant change is highly unlikely.
Chang organizes his material within ten chapters whose titles correctly indicate the step-by-step process:

I rate this book so highly because its coverage of material is eloquent, practical, comprehensive, and cohesive. It remains for each organization (regardless of its size or nature) to select, combine, modify, and then apply Chang's key ideas. The Purpose of Passion

There are no companies; only people - people who run them and people who purchase their goods and services - and people need inspiration, a sense of purpose; they need passion. Among other things, passion creates energy, fosters creativity, inspires action and attracts customers - it provides critical edge (competitive advantage). And, in this follow-on book to his "The Passion Plan: A Step-by-Step Guide to Discovering, Developing, and Living Your Passion", Richard Chang presents his 7-step model for bringing that inspiration, that passion, to an organization.

You Start with the Heart, a `Feeling' exercise:
1. Step one looks for sources of passion and involves listing situations that thrilled or enthralled the top executives, and it asks for an assessment of why passion-deficit symptoms exist.
2. Step two develops a passion profile by looking at; leaders' personal passions, leaders' shared passions, associate and customer passions, historical passions, core competencies, and future opportunities. Integration of these reveals the organization's Core Passions.
Then you move to the Thinking phase:
3. Clarifying Purpose to channel the discovered core passions is step three. Why does the organization exist? How can the core passions help achieve this purpose? What are the profits of these passion pursuits? These are the questions to be answered in this step.
4. Step four creates an Action Plan; defining the scope, intensity and pace of change necessary to release the core passions.
Next comes the Acting part:
5. In this Perform with Passion step, leaders are urged to `investigate' ways the newly released passions have succeeded (and failed), `communicate' with stakeholders, and `assess' progress; recognize the need to create a passion-inspiring environment via passion-driven policies, practices, and possibly realign around the core passions.
6. Although passion by its nature will be contagious, step six is a Spread Excitement movement by nurturing peoples' passion, integrating passion into the reward structure and finding the passion gaps.
7. In the final step, Staying the Passion Course, an organization must fight complacency and fuel the fire. This will involve confronting challenges, recovering from mistakes, and seeking opportunities to expand passion.

There it is - the seven-step model, illustrated in the book through stories of twelve organizations that, according to Chang, have successfully captured the passion and realized the benefits. The book is well written and a very easy read; but beyond the model is the real work of moving passion from leadership workshops and plans into the living performance vision of the organization via a connection to the individuals (staff) who must make it their own to make it happen for the business. While I fully agree with Chang's assertions about the importance of passion (an important source of a person's internal energy), finding it individually and moving it into business processes goes beyond the depth of this book.

Plot development is fast paced and most chapters average just two pages, with macabre twists and unforeseen consequences. In many stories the protagonist actually fades out into darkness and one can assume death is their ultimate fate—these entries are not for the faint of heart. In one of the more ghastly tales, "Mr. Chompywhomp," a little girl needs to make a sudden unescorted trip to her Aunt's house, who lives around the block. She runs into three nasty older boys who seem to be out to harm her. Luckily she has her teddy bear, Mr. Chompywomp. When the boys tease her and rip the bear's head off its body, a strange demonlike creature emerges from the bear and starts eating the boys' hearts, one by one. The demon grooms himself, jumps back inside the teddy bear, and the little girl tells the grisly double creature not to worry, Auntie will have a sewing kit to fix it up, "good as new." Each story contains a twist, and though many are humorous, others earn their “creepy” moniker. Not every protagonist in these stories will live to see another day. Following the stories, Lubar gives short explanations of each tale’s inspiration. Stories include parents who fake a zombie apocalypse to avoid hosting a birthday party, a vicious doll in a dumpster, and giant squid creatures who wipe out a school because the students are too busy on their smartphones to escape. Only the protagonist, whose parents have steadfastly refused to buy her a phone, survives. The language is evocative but not overly challenging. For instance, in a story about animated cat litter, the girl sees “assorted lumps lurking beneath the surface of the litter.” With its mix of humor and chills, this collection is a sure bet for fans of R. As Promised: Wonderfully Warped and Creatively Creepy

I'm a fan of David Lubar's story collections. His novels, "Hidden Talents" and "True Talents", are successful, substantial, and accomplished, but for bite sized "horror" treats I like the idea of an anthology of very short creepy episodes. These stories are like little scary mental potato chips; able to give the reader a scary or weird "zing", but not detailed, lengthy or real enough to get inside a kid's head. I also like them because I think they are more creative, cover a wider range, and are better written than the general run of such tales.

For what it's worth, and as you might expect, not every story is a winner. But, even in the stories that aren't all that wonderful, the author does a good job of setting the tale at kid-reader level, and makes an honest effort to add something a little new to whatever idea he's working with.

It's also nice to have a few books, (this is the seventh collection), that are just beyond early chapter books, but not too demanding, and that have an edgy payoff. Lots of books aimed at the 8 to 12 year crowd are bland or predictable or just watered down versions of their older siblings. These stories seem to be made for and aimed right at the funny/horror/gross sweet spot for 8 to 12's, and I don't think that fact is lost on those readers.

So, they're fun, they're creepy; they're age appropriate. A nice find and worth a try for a young reader with a budding taste for horror or creepy weirdness.

(By the way, if you type "Lubar" into an Amazon book search the site will ask you if you mean "lunar" or possibly "lumbar". Right there I think that goes a long way toward explaining why David Lubar is so twisted.)

Wipeout of the Wireless Weenies, by David Lubar definitely rang true on being full of creepy. I obtained this book from the publisher before the release date, free for review, in hopes that my 8 year old would like it too. He isn't up for this type of spook yet, but I know many young boys who are. I loved the creativity in each of the different stories. This was my first David Ludbar creepy reading experience and I had already purchased a different title for my son without realizing it, but will hold off on having him read it a little longer, just because my son isn't as fond of the supernatural gory stories I liked as a child.

If your child likes age appropriate (8-13) gore, gross, creepy, Zombies, and other boogies this would be an excellent read. It reminded me a little of the Goosebumps books, but the stories are short stories and not related. This reading experience has definitely peeked my interest even if my son isn't yet ready we will be keeping an eye on this author's various series.

Simple, Not Easy, Very Effective

I just finished MMS. It was a huge success for me. I put on 10lbs of lean mass and got much much stronger. I have always been quite weak, and the first workout of 30x95 was a max for me. I didn't know how I was going to do it twice three days later. I ended up being fine and every workout felt like significant progress. I wanted to share some of the insights I have come up with from the experience.

A little background for reference:
Age: 25
Training Age: 2.5 years
Height: 6'2"
Starting Weight: 192lbs
Max Starting Back Squat: 225x2
Max Starting Bench: 185x1
Max Starting Press: 135x1

The final results were:
Weight: 202lbs
Back Squat: 205x30
Bench: 215x1
Complex: 2 reps at 125

Other relavent information:
Diet was paleo except for the protein shakes. I never missed a workout. I missed supplements and shakes 3 times in the 6 weeks. I always trained alone. I wouldn't have thought the last one mattered much, but thought more about it after reading the link on the Dan John blog recently.

As far as I'm concerned, any one of those numbers would have qualified for success, but the group is very satisfying.

Now for what I learned:

Complexes are key to making the gains lean. Along with their value in adding upper body mass, they keep the heart rate up to burn fat. The high rep complexes in the first part of the program were sometimes the hardest part of the workout. As the weight went up and the reps went down, the stress on the lungs and heart went way down, but my arms held me back in the pressing. I really enjoyed the complexes and will continue with them regularly.

Pressing takes a lot of reps. Like a lot people, overhead pressing has always been very difficult to me. Progress was very slow, but doing 30ish reps of bench and 20-30 reps of single arm presses added a lot of strength in those movements.

Warm ups and rest periods matter. In the past, I have done as little warm up reps and exercises as possible. With the stress involved in this program, I took the warm ups very seriously and used them to my advantage. I foam rolled and stretched every workout and never had a injury. I wouldn't expect anything major, but I didn't even have a twinge anywhere. As the weight went up in the pressing and complexes, the rest periods really started to matter. At first I was disappointed because they extended the workouts, but as my strength went up as I started training smarter, I discovered their value.

Size happens in clothes before the scale. All of my clothes are nearly too small with just 10lbs of mass gain. I feel like a completely different person even though not much has changed.

High rep squats burn out the mind and the back before anything else. I always quit the "to 50" sets when I thought I couldn't take the pain in my back any longer. I never worried about missing a rep, but resting with the bar on my back took as much out of me as the actual movement. I think my back turned out to be my most obvious weakest link. I will be focusing on back strength a lot in the near future.

When you are eating "clean" 3,000 calories is a lot of food. I never checked calories until the program was over because I was always eating as much as I could. I was shocked to find that even with the prescribed shakes, I was under 3,500 most days. I stayed with the paleo diet because it has kept me so healthy and I noticed major differences when I eat grains or dairy. I can see how valuable peanut butter and jelly sandwichs are though. When I recommend this program, I will make sure to say they are worth it if size is the goal.

Fiber helps.

I kept a lot of notes and have been writing a lot more since I completed the program. I think I learned a lot about myself and training from the past six weeks, but I expect to learn a lot more in the near future. Thanks for providing such a great program. Like most programs, when you DO them, they work.

Another brilliant book. Exactly what I expect from Dan John, really. It's simple without being dumbed down, and you should come to understand the idea of adding one piece to the puzzle at a time, track your progress, and see what made the greatest difference for you.

A Most Important Book

The most important part of this book, which I think some critics have missed, is the introduction by Robert Wenzel, where he summarizes the many achievements of Austrian school economists. Anyone trying to understand Austrian school business cycle theory should have this background information. It provides an understanding of the rich history and contributions of these economists and puts Austrian business cycle theory into its proper context.

Of course, if you are an economic scholar the introduction is not necessary but for most of us, especially newcomers it is very important and can't be found in other Rothbard discussions of the business cycle.

Handy State by State Resource For Airport Eateries

Even though the title should be changed to "The $500 Hamburger" with Aviation Gas prices the way they are it is a very handy resource to find destination airport restaurants and dinners. In the past I have used earlier versions of this book and have found it useful to find a place to take my family to eat while on flying trips. I highly recommend it to anyone wanting to find places to eat along your route or for the weekend afternoon jaunt to a local eatery for lunch. Companion Book to "Feud"

I had long been putting off reading this GEM of a book. So glad I waited because reading "My Way" while watching "Feud" was an absolutely delicious experience. I was transported back to girlhood when I lived and breathed Old Hollywood and Hollywood glamor. Joan Crawford was undeniably one of a kind in a realm of silver screen giants, even if the book definitely reveals her certain disinterest in raising children, fueling what we believe we know about her after the publication of "Mommie Dearest" — and sometimes she creepily ventures too far into the pleasing of one's man territory —but what the book also reveals is a woman who was tough and feminine, a woman who was open about her changes in fortune without an ounce of self-pity, and a woman who was able to improvise living large and well long past her Metro Goldwyn Mayer days, and a star who was aging with grace. (At least, on the page, she was.) The tone is friendly and authoritative. Her description of matching her shoes to her outfits by having shoes made with the same fabric as her dress and then covering them with plastic was a scream. Many delightful tips on taking care of clothing and cleaning. And Mamacita needs her own biography.
