Very Nice Stationary Set, heavy stock, 2 envelope styles, 8 different card designs (I added pictures)

I recently ordered this set to use for holiday tips. Packaged in a very pretty big envelope. Inside are two different envelope styles and 16 cards.

Envelopes are 6 by 9 inches. Cards are a little smaller, odd shaped [see pictures]. Very colorful on heavy stock. Note these cards are not folded, they only have a front and a back with some lines for your notes. Stickers are very pretty.

Card designs are: snowman, dog, penguin, reindeer, Christmas tree, Santa, Santa's helper and gingerbread man.

Overall, a very nice set. Just shy of 5 stars because not all cards are Holiday themed [dog, penguin].

Good Information, compact format

The Homebrewer's Answer book contains a lot of useful information in it's 400+ pages. The writer of the Ask Mr. Wizard column in Brew Your Own magazine has always provided well written, thoughtful replies to the questions he's received from all levels of brewers over the years, and these are collected in this book. Some of the questions are very basic, especially in the first couple sections, but there are a lot of very good questions from intermediate brewers in the later sections.

The only problem with the book is the format. It is small - a little shorter and wider than a standard paperback, which makes it difficult to hold and read. Perhaps the publisher thought that a pocket manual would be nifty. Unfortunately it tends to impede the readability.

Second, while the Questions are organized into several sections: Sanitation, Ingredients, Lagering, Packaging, Troubleshooting, Extract Brewing, All-grain Brewing, etc., there is no list of questions at the front of each section so that you can easily find Your question, and you therefore have to keep turning pages to find what you are looking for. Fortunately, the Questions are in bold, with seperators between questions, and there are several diagrams and sidebars to help illustrate the Answers. The index is well done too.

Bottom line: a good source of brewing information from a solid author, with an Issue, Consequences, and Resolution writing style, which I like. Perhaps the compact format won't be a problem for other readers. Get yourself some 3M Post-It Flags (tm) and this can indeed be a handy book.

100% Q&A From an Expert

I picked this book up after a brief scan of the contents. Having read through it, what I really liked was Lewis' opinions. I.e., while there is plain-Jane factual content, many answers go beyond and touch on his preferences and rationales. He actually calls himself "ferociously opinionated" in one answer.

In the end that's what I'm really trying to get out of a book like this. Brewing can be approached in a paint-by-the-numbers fashion or more thoughtfully, with understanding and a full appreciation for the alternatives and creativity involved. Thoughtful answers and opinions from an expert support the latter. He simply refuses to buy into the notion you can scale recipes up and down in simple fashion, for example. Moreover, he offers tidbits of advice you won't find elsewhere, e.g., splitting a sample section of hose to look for cracks indicative of beerstone buildup, as one small example. Or his thoughts on sanitation, which offers both opinions and data I haven't seen elsewhere. Ditto filtration, yeast propagation, equipment, hot side aeration and a score of other topics.

So ... I find myself in agreement with John J. Palmer on this review - not a bad place to be! (John J. Palmer is author of one of the very best homebrewing books available: How to Brew: Everything You Need To Know To Brew Beer Right The First Time) And I COMPLETELY disagree with another reviewer that this book amounts to "Brewing for Retards."

The only thing I don't like about this book is the format. It's a blocky, squarish, fat little book with cardboard covers of the type you find on children's books. I can't think of a single good reason why the publisher chose this format. My 4-star rating reflects the format, not the contents.

A Book That Would be Better Titled, "Brewing for Complete Retards"

I purchased this book thinking it might be a nice reference to keep around in the case that my curiosity got the better of me and I wanted to know why my beer came out the way it did. Upon reading part of it and scanning over the rest I soon realized that it was not a book for me... or anyone who would have the curiosity to buy it. It is presented in a Q and A format where Joe Brewer writes in to ask questions like "I made a beer that tastes like malt vinegar. Is that a bad thing?" or "I heard that brass contains lead, is this true?" If you actually ARE wondering the answers to these questions then maybe this book is for you but with its grade school topics, this is NOT a serious brewing book.

Everything you need to know to tell flannel board stories.

I train childcare teachers and use this book when teaching how to tell flannel board stories. The author gives guidelines for using the flannel board story with different age groups. A total of 50+ stories, poems, and songs are included, some appropriate for the younger child, some for ages five and older. The selection is varied, including familiar stories such as "Three Billy Goats Gruff" and "The Three Pigs". Also included are folktales which are less familiar but equally wonderful. For each story, the author shares special directions for using the flannel board characters and how to include the children in the telling of that story. For me, a special feature of this book are the patterns for the characters--they are large, clear, and easy to duplicate.

The Flannel Board Storytelling Book

As a volunteer storyteller for our local library's storytime, I have recently looked through this book and found it to be a superb addition to our resource section. Here are 4 reasons I have found this book to be helpful enough to own my own copy. 1. It is instantly useable, no need to tweak and edit the stories. 2. The stories lend themselves to puppets as well. 3. The stories and rhymes are simple and easy to use. 4. The book itself is nicely organized.

Christmas gifts for the grandchildren...

I purchased The Flannel Board Storytelling Book as the first step in making flannel board stories for my grandchildren. I am very pleased with this purchase. The figures are simple. Though preparation of the stories will be time-consuming, I believe first teaching the stories, then letting my grandchildren teach me will be well worth the price I paid for this book. It is a collection of both well-loved stories from my childhood, and many others that teach values and offer the opportunity to talk about life situations. I'm excited for Christmas. R ALLEN

"Smart went crazy," Allen Ginsberg wrote in 1949. Detractors were eager to agree that the "culture of spontaneity" was a blind for neurotic misfits: the nihilist paint-dribbler, the nodding soloist, the sensation-addled writer who had "lost his eraser." Daniel Belgrad shows that for young artists coming out of the industrial indoctrination of the War, or spit from its corporatized propaganda offices, the political was not only personal but physical. (Trumpeter Tony Frusella knew what he was talking about when he quit Charlie Barnet's big band, calling it "just like the army.") Having unearthed the institutional, intellectual, and personal linkages of the period that earn his book its broad title, Belgrad has gone on to write a compelling narrative, putting living flesh on shorthand intuitions that connect North Beach to Black Mountain College, Fenollosa to Pollock, Jackson Lears's No Place of Grace to Todd Gitlin's The Sixties. While film and photography would seem to deserve a chapter more than ceramics does (Robert Frank, amazingly, goes unmentioned), the latter's inclusion suggests an acute historical eye at work, finding the keynotes of an era in activities from which the vain gaze of the present has silently shifted.

Whether your interest is in improvisation, spontaneity, creativity, performance, popular culture, or modern history, this book provides necessary background in understanding origins of much of the creativity that defines the lives we lead in the Western World today. Mr. Belgrad's work is academically rigorous and beautifully written at the same time. The connections among and between the people who have often previously been thought of as individuals or members of subcultural cliques is amazing. Belgrad's list is long and impressive and beautifully researched. From the beat poets and writers (Keroac, Ginsberg, Leroi Jones), to the abstract impressionists (Pollack); from the Zen potters to the modern and improvisational dancers (Merce Cunningham); from New York to Black Mountain College to San Francisco, the era of Post War America was explored by amazing people. This book links and weaves the lives, ideas, work, and play of these people as no one has ever done before. Mr. Belgrad's reference list is a gold mine of research directions. If you are seriously involved in Improvisation at any level this is absolutely required reading.

Really a social commentary with provocative thoughts, not a pure biography

Having read Bedini's biography of Banneker, it is hard to place Cerami's book in the same category. It would be more appropriate to label the Cerami's book as a commentary on Banneker's times from a social perspective. While Bedini cited research on every fact in his book, Cerami took the liberty to write pages of suppositions-- attributing motives to Banneker character without reference to either source or explicit explanation. While these passages are interesting, they appear to be the author's speculation. If labeled as such, these "insights' would be useful hypotheses to explore. In a final analysis, this book should be listed as an historical novel-- well written and stimulating of thought, but without documentation.

The Best Biography on Benjamin Banneker

This biopic of Bejamin Banneker (Ben Bey) is very revealing and gives the reader a look inside of Banneker's personal life (even though some of it might be merely educated guess work regarding his intimate relationships). Some conjecture and innuendo is tossed around a bit irresponsibly but overall one of the best if not the best work on Ben Bey. This has to be one of the first books about Ben Bey that mentions his hereditary extraction (Malian & Fulani). I didn't know upon Banneker's expiration his house and most of all his works were burned to ashes by his racist enemies. Depriving the world of a first hand look into his accomplishments. Cerami also explains the close friendship of Ben Bey and Benjamin Franklin in detail. I believe Charles Cerami portrays Ben Bey and his scientific genius better than all the biographies before it.
