MICHAEL SAMONAS is a finance professional with extensive experience in Financial Planning, Analysis and Modelling. He is currently the Group CFO of SIDMA S.A, a member of Viohalco Group of companies. Some basics of what a financial statement is. Then we are told how to build an Excel spreadsheet with a model. We even get screen shots from dialog boxes in Excel. The author tops it up with some discussion on valuation. Everything is very basic. By McKinsey's book "Valuation" instead

Michael McTear

Michael McTear is Emeritus Professor at the University of Ulster with a special research interest in spoken language technologies. He graduated in German Language and Literature from Queens University Belfast in 1965, was awarded MA in Linguistics at University of Essex in 1975, and a PhD at the University of Ulster in 1981. He has been Visiting Professor at the University of Hawaii (1986-87), the University of Koblenz, Germany (1994-95), and University of Granada, Spain (2006- 2010). He has been researching in the field of spoken dialogue systems for more than fifteen years and is the author of the widely used textbook Spoken dialogue technology: toward the conversational user interface (Springer, 2004). He also is a co-author (with Kristiina Jokinen) of the book Spoken Dialogue Systems, (Morgan and Claypool, 2010), and (with Zoraida Callejas) of the book Voice Application Development for Android (Packt Publishing, 2013).

Zoraida Callejas

Zoraida Callejas is Associate Professor at the University of Granada, Spain, and member of the CITIC-UGR Research Institute. She graduated in Computer Science in 2005, and was awarded a PhD in 2008, also at the University of Granada. Her research is focused on dialogue systems, especially on affective human-machine conversational interaction, and she has made more than 160 contributions to books, journals and conferences. She has participated in several research projects related to these topics and contributes to scientific committees and societies in the area. �She has been Visiting Professor at the Technical University of Liberec, Czech Republic (2007-13), University of Trento, Italy (2008), University of Ulster, Northern Ireland (2009), Technical University of Berlin, Germany (2010), University of Ulm, Germany (2012, 2014) and ParisTech, France (2013). She is co-author (with Michael McTear) of the book Voice Application Development for Android (Packt Publishing, 2013).

David Griol

David Griol is Professor at the Department of Computer Science in the Carlos III University of Madrid (Spain). He obtained his Ph.D. degree in Computer Science from the Technical University of Valencia (Spain) in 2007. He also has a B.S. in Telecommunication Science from this University. He has participated in several European and Spanish projects related to natural language processing and conversational interfaces. His main research activities are mostly related to the study of statistical methodologies for dialog management, dialog simulation, user modeling, adaptation and evaluation of dialog systems, mobile technologies, and multimodal interfaces. His research results have been applied to several application domains including Education, Healthcare, Virtual Environments, Augmented Reality, Ambient Intelligence and Smart Environments, and he has published in a number of international journals and conferences. He has been a visiting researcher at the University of Ulster (Belfast, UK), Technical University of Liberec (Liberec, Czech Republic), University of Trento (Trento, Italy), Technical University of Berlin (Berlin, Germany), and ParisTech University (Paris, France). He is a member of several research associations for Artificial Intelligence, Speech Processing, and Human-Computer Interaction.

The Connected Advisor is one of the best books I have read on the subject of practice management for advisors. I liked the format and the step by step approach Maureen used. It is easy to read, and the nice thing is... on practically every page is a great strategy, tip, or some advice from a real pro. I also liked the fact that it was inspirational, too. You won't be disappointed if you read the book. I totally recommend it.

Clear, easy to use. I tried to study a bit every night on a 40 day hike through southern France. However, given the price particularly,a very serious criticism is that there is no audio in the eBook.

His girls are gorgeous and this calender is absolutely beautiful. But beware of these unrealistic sellers. This calender is not rare whatsoever. Why they are listing it at ridiculous prices goes beyond me. If you can find a comic book shop, then they probably have it for 20 bucks. Or you can go to the original source and buy it from J. Scott Campbell's site. Sorry, but I don't want customers to be jipped of their money for no real reason.

Great calendar, but it's 2013, why am I still reviewing this?

Because Amazon told me to. But it is also awesome art work that's nice to look at regardless of the year. J. Scott Campbell is a master of the female form. (Probably draws the best Mary Jane I've ever seen.) This calendar is printed on pretty good paper, and it is almost as good as a print. There were some difficulties with the 2013 version, but I hear he still wants to do a 2014. If you ever see that calendar on here, be sure to swipe it up. I got this on Amazon for $10, half off of what it is normally. Even at full price though, this calendar is worth every penny.

Bestselling author Laura Berk is joined by new coauthor Adena Meyers. “Our distinct areas of specialization make us a great team for coauthoring,” says Berk. Berk and Meyers’ teaching, research and practical experience bring tremendous expertise and insight to this new edition.

Berk and Meyers are faculty colleagues in the Department of Psychology at Illinois State University. They have collaborated on numerous projects, most recently coauthoring the chapter on make-believe play and self-regulation for the Sage Handbook of Play and Learning in Early Childhood.

Laura E. Berk is a distinguished professor of psychology at Illinois State University, where she has taught child, adolescent, and lifespan development for more than three decades. She received her bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of California, Berkeley, and her master’s and doctoral degrees in child development and educational psychology from the University of Chicago.

Berk has been a visiting scholar at Cornell University, UCLA, Stanford University, and the University of South Australia. She has published widely on effects of school environments on children’s development, the development of children’s private speech, and the role of make-believe play in development. She has been featured on National Public Radio’s Morning Edition and in Parents Magazine, Wondertime, and Readers’ Digest, and has contributed to Psychology Today and Scientific American.

In addition to Infants, Children, and Adolescents, Berk's best-selling texts include Child Development, Development Through the Lifespan, and Exploring Lifespan Development, published by Pearson. Her other books include Private Speech: From Social Interaction to Self-Regulation; Scaffolding Children’s Learning: Vygotsky and Early Childhood Education; Awakening Children’s Minds: How Parents and Teachers Can Make a Difference; and A Mandate for Playful Learning in Preschool: Presenting the Evidence.

Berk is active in work for children’s causes. She recently completed nine years of service on the national board of Jumpstart for Young Children and currently serves on the governing board of the Illinois Network of Child Care Resource and Referral Agencies. She is a fellow of the American Psychological Association, Division 7: Developmental Psychology.

Adena B. Meyers is a professor of psychology and member of the school psychology faculty at Illinois State University. She received her bachelor’s degree in women’s studies from Brown University and her doctoral degree in clinical-community psychology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and is a licensed clinical psychologist.

Meyers' areas of specialization include contextual influences on child and adolescent development, with an emphasis on family-, school-, and community-based interventions that promote children’s social and emotional functioning. She has served as a consultant to the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL), and as a supervisor of mental health consultants working in Head Start preschool settings. She also supervises clinicians providing mental health services to elementary and secondary school students.

Meyers' publications have focused on school-based consultation; adolescent pregnancy, parenthood, and sexual development; school-based preventive interventions; and the role of pretend play in child development. Her clinical interests include therapeutic interventions related to stress and trauma and mindfulness-based stress reduction. She has taught a wide variety of courses, including introductory psychology, child and adolescent development, human sexuality, introduction to women’s studies, and statistics for the social sciences.

How our home was built

In this excellent volume, Robert Hazen tells us the story of how earth came to be, a real story that is grander than any creation myth. He starts with the Big Bang and then leads us through the formation of stars, galaxies, the solar system and finally to the evolution of earth. Hazen is a geologist by training so he especially excels in recounting the the formation of the planet from minerals and elements and their subsequent differentiation into the core, magma and crust that define the structure of our planet.

But this is where the story is just getting warmed up. The upheavals that earth faced during the next 4.5 billion years have been tremendous and Hazen documents them exceedingly well. Earth has seen huge transitions that crucially contributed to the evolution and extinction of life. These included massive tectonic shifts, the famous continental drifts, intense periodic cycles of thawing and freezing, the waxing and waning of oxygen levels in the atmosphere and the constant churning and renewing of earth's raw materials through volcanic, oceanic and tectonic activity. The magnitude of these events is illustrated for instance by the fact that at one point in time the Appalachians were submerged in the ocean. The movement of entire continents across thousands of miles, the rise and fall of imposing mountain ranges and the obliteration of thousands of species and landscapes by the impact of meteorites is almost impossible to imagine. But the evidence is incontrovertible.

The real strength of the book is in describing the influence of this grand geological drama on the evolution of life, and how this evolution would have been impossible without the crucial interplay between geology and biology. Hazen describes the key scientific methods that told us about the massive changes in earth's history; most of these methods involve isotopic studies of one kind or another and have been paramount in revealing for instance how changes in oxygen levels decisively impacted the evolution of the shapes, sizes and ecological niches of living organisms. These studies combined with meticulous classification of fossils have provided a vision of a planet whose supposed tranquility conceals game changing events like asteroid impacts and mass extinctions. Yet where there is death there is life, and it was these catastrophes that greatly influenced the evolution of species; for instance, the meteorite that wiped out the dinosaurs opened up all kinds of ecological niches for mammals, a key evolutionary step without which humans may likely have not seen the light of day. Similar geological phenomena shaped the structure, function, life and death of countless species, with at least five major mass extinctions documented in the planetary record. In addition the periodic ice ages further sculpted the distribution of resources and the fate of creatures which fed on these resources.

The last part of the book struck me as especially poignant. In it Hazen dispels the silly notion that we need to "save the planet". Whatever the impacts of climate change are, the fact is that earth has always been in flux and the changes it has undergone have been so massive that although humans can affect its makeup to some extent, our planet will go on cycling between these gargantuan alterations with or without our intervention. Its history indicates that ultimately the earth does not really care what we do. As Hazen puts is, the earth will assuredly survive; what we really need to save is ourselves.

Great popular overview of a huge subject, with a twist.

This has to be about the most coherent and readable book about the formation of our planet that I have read. It made the processes that formed Earth make sense in ways that no other book has (and I've read some good ones). But it also reads like a family album, or the biography of a beloved friend. For those reasons alone I recommend it.

The bonus of the book (and the area most likely up for debate) is the fresh viewpoint that the author brings to the symbiotic connection between biological life and geology. We all understand that without the basic elements that were gathered from the cosmos by the Earth, life could not have begun. But it also appears that it was life itself that then began to alter "lifeless" geology, mainly in the form of minerals that then became the further building blocks of ever-evolving life forms.

Life exists in many forms and in many places on and in the earth. We tend to think of the things that live and crawl on the surface, or swim in the sea, but the roots of living plants facilitate chemical reactions in rocks and soil to a degree that their actions must be considered a significant shaper of landscape -- more so than erosion by wind and rain.

It is a way to see our planet that has an elegant and fascinating complexity to it. Our life story is not one of life simply springing up on a watery planet that just happened to be the right distance from an energy-supplying sun, but of an interplay between chemistry, environment, time and chance that has played out over and over and over again through extinctions and near extinctions, changes in atmosphere and the chemical composition of the oceans as well as the surface of the planet to arrive at the biologically-rich world that we know today.

As one might expect, there is a final-chapter discussion of our current climate issue, but it is set firmly within a recognition of the dynamic nature of our planet:

"In the midst of these forces, our species has proved to be resilient, clever, and adaptable. We have learned technological tricks to shape our world to our will: we mine and refine its metals, fertilize and cultivate its soils, divert and exploit its rivers, extract and burn its fossil fuels. Our actions are not without consequences. Every day, if we are attuned to the dynamic process of our planetary home, we can experience every facet of its intertwined creative forces. I highly recommend this book both as a fine tale of our home planet, and as a reminder of how many important scientific discoveries about it have come in our lifetimes.

A Tour de Force

To tell a story spanning 4.5 billion years in one book? It's a hard ask, but Robert Hazen does it and does it well, striking the right balance between too little detail and too much. The section on how competition for rock surfaces drove the organisation and concentration of complex biomolecules, the building blocks of life, was intellectually stunning. That natural selection might have been at work before life even existed came as a profound revelation, as is the thought that the same processes may have laid the foundations for life on other planets and moons (Europa for example).

Would that all those mired in superstition, fear, and ignorance might read this book with open, enquiring, and rational minds.
