Twelve-year-old Fee is a shy Korean American boy and a newly named section leader of the first sopranos in his local boys’ choir. But when Fee learns how the director treats his section leaders, he is so ashamed he says nothing of the abuse, not even when Peter, his best friend, is in line to be next. When the director is arrested, Fee tries to forgive himself for his silence. But when Peter takes his own life, Fee blames only himself. In the years that follow he slowly builds a new life, teaching near his hometown. There he meets a young student who is the picture of Peter and is forced to confront the past he believed was gone. Told with “the force of a dream and the heft of a life,”* Edinburgh marked Chee “as a major talent whose career will bear watching” (Publishers Weekly).

“A coming-of-age tale in the grand Romantic tradition, where passions run high, Cupid stalks Psyche, and love shares the dance floor with death . . . A lovely, nuanced, never predictable portrait of a creative soul in the throes of becoming.” —Washington Post

From The New Yorker
When the director of a boys' choir in Maine molests his young charges, the damage he inflicts spirals outward in ever larger circles. The novel's hero, Fee, a Korean-American teen-ager, is unable to separate what has been done to him from his own budding desire for a fellow-choirboy, and is thus unable to save his friend from the same fate. Years later, as a high-school teacher, Fee discovers that the choir director's son is one of his students. Chee has chosen difficult territory for his first novel, but by balancing its anguish with fantasy and Korean folk tales, he keeps a sad story from becoming maudlin.

From Booklist
If a story about child molestation could ever be beautiful, this first novel comes very close to that unusual mark. Fee is a 12-year-old soprano in a boys choir in Maine. The choir director, however, is revealed to be a malicious pederast, who selects favorites from the choir and subjects them to frequent sexual abuse. The pain that Fee and his friends endure while growing up with this horrible fact, even after the director is imprisoned, is almost unfathomable. But Fee gets through it, although the dread stays with him all his life--through his self-destructive college days and as he courts a succession of lovers. Years later, as he begins teaching at a prep school, he encounters a beautiful student named Warden, the son of Fee's former choirmaster, who knows nothing of his father's deeds. Confronting this student, Fee is forced to contend with the demons of his boyhood and the very way he has lived his life. A spectacular, gripping, and gut-wrenching tale. Michael Spinella

A stunning debut by a thoroughly unique talent
By Grady Harp
There is a joy in discovering new novels by fresh young writers that compares favorably with the elation of returning to the works of the masters. Alexander Chee has burst onto the scene with a novel unique in language, in mode of storytellng, in nuances of imagery that the oft overused adjective "stunning" feels to be the only appropriate descriptor. Known only to this reader from his contribution to the touching anthology LOSS WITHIN LOSS, Chee emerges here in his debut novel EDINBURGH as fully groomed storyteller, wordsmith, poet, and excavator of the human plight. His ability to wrap a tough story in the atmospheric language that adroitly mirrors the onomatopoeia of the Asian language patterns while enchanting us with the beauty of Korean mythology and anthropomorphism takes what could be a loathsome tragedy and creates a sensitive coming of age and rites of passage tale.
The story is well documented on this site by the editorial and customer reviews and that is adequate to inform you of what lies between the covers of this seemingly short novel. But the story seems only a matrix to explore, with the metaphors of air/earth/fire/water that Chee so consumately weaves in this poetic tapestry, a young man's journey through the abyss and height of self discovery, of sexuality, of ancestral imprints, to the eventual knowledge of his pace in the cosmos.
Consider even the chosen title EDINBURGH: in the state of Maine (and in the state of youth) the main character enters a safe haven library whose ceiling is a fresco of that city in Scotland struck by the Great Plague and whose library contents contain the centuries old last words of a man dying from that disaster. Chee takes that particular moment to let us envision the past and the future of a young man on the journey to self discovery. How perceptions and memories of childhood eventually inform our sense of adult self, how the choices of repetition of pain and old habits can lead to self destruction or, conquering them, foster a spiritual state of grace and resolved peace - these are the gentle lines of thought that tie this wondrously written book tighly together.
Reading EDINBURGH is an ultimate joy, like hearing a new piece of music on its opening performance. Chee appears securely destined to be a very important voice in American literature over the next decades. Read him now, at the beginning, and grow. This is a stunning book.

Beautifully written, sensitively told
By Debbie Lee Wesselmann
This beautifully written novel's subject matter will probably alienate some readers, but I urge you to read this entire review before deciding whether this book is for you.
Twelve year old Aphias Zhe, nicknamed Fee, has a crystalline soprano voice, and so when he auditions for a boys choir, he is immediately accepted. What Fee knows intuitively becomes concrete as the choir director, Big Eric, takes Fee and a few other boys on an outing in the woods: Big Eric is a pedophile who preys on the young boys' vulnerability. Where others cannot, Fee sees right through to the man and his preference for fair-headed boys like Fee's best friend, Peter. Fee, who is part Korean, part Scottish, is not a favorite; he watches mainly from a distance, knowing the danger Big Eric poses but unwilling to articulate it. He hopes that the false front Big Eric has constructed will never crumble for, if it does, Fee fears he will also be revealed for what he is. When the choir director is caught, the wake of his crime crushes his victims, even those who live to adulthood.
As Fee grows up, he appears to recover, but inside he wants to die. He is gay, not because of the choir director's crime but in spite of it. Fee wants love, tenderness, someone who can rival the affection he felt for Peter, and not the predatory sex Big Eric sought. Yet, Fee continues to be haunted by what happened. When as an adult he meets a blonde boy who reminds him of Peter and who, despite his young age, has a connection to what happened long ago, Fee must confront his demons.
While at times overly lyrical, the novel is a delicate coming-of-age story. Chee has a remarkable command of images and language which add rich layers to what could have been a simple plot. The emotion he infuses in his words makes Fee's pain and quest for love universal. If you think only gay men will enjoy this, think again. As a heterosexual woman, I found myself engrossed in this novel and its characters. Ultimately, EDINBURGH is about truth, self, and the yearning for a place in the world.

A Fine First Novel Beautifully Written
By Foster Corbin
I suppose Mr. Chee had no way of knowing this novel would be so topical given the current child molestation scandal in the Catholic Church. He has written a very fine first novel about the horror of molestation told from the child's standpoint. Fee, a Korean-American growing up in Maine, is molested by his choir director Big Eric. Not one to shy away from thorny subjects, Mr. Chee, nevertheless, treats the delicate subject of molestation with restraint and grace. He is very good at creating a certain mood with few words. This novel is full of colors. The dark Fee is attracted to the gold of blondes. White, the color of death, is associated with the absence of color. The final section of the book is entitled "Blue."
My one criticism of this novel is that I was unable to distinguish the voice of Fee from that of the character Waren. Mr. Chee writes so well, however, that it hardly matters. I look forward to his next novel.

From Library Journal
Evoking the age of wooden ships and iron men, Mondfeld has produced a highly detailed vade mecum for the period ship modeler. Using excellent line illustrations, graphs, and photographs, he charts a course through the intricate art of period ship modeling for ships of the age of sail. Additionally, there is maritime history on virtually every page. Since this work is an English translation of Historische Schiffsmodelle , the syntax is a bit stiff and the narrative runs into the gutter of the book, making for some difficulty in reading. Still, with this book the ship modeler will have fair winds to assist in this craft. Highly recommended.

The Defintive Guide Found
By G. Warnock
After searching the internet extensively for information on the rigging of Continental cannons and carronades I got pretty much nothing. Within 1 minute of opening this book, I had everything I needed. Reviewing additional sections showed me the wealth of information I had just tapped. The internet may have the information I need, but not at one place like this book. Excellent print, excellent information and the drawings are absolutely the most concise and accurate I have seen anywhere. I hit the goldmine with this reference piece.

Standards-based and VERY pertinent to today's issues
By G. Wilde
I am a high school chemistry teacher. This book is by far the best I've seen at introducing chemical issues AND rudimentary chemistry at the same time. It is very heavily text-based, and there is minimal math. However the dense reading must be taken slowly by some students-- especially younger students with challenged reading levels. This book is perfect for conceptual or environmental chemistry classes, and the exercises promote deep and analytical thinking. The definitions are lightly highlighted, and there are valuable web resources and links within the text as well. I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to learn more about how chemistry applies to global climate change, acid rain, and alternative energy. Excellent!

They found paradise.…what would they do to keep it?

“Lagoon swims and boozy nights turn sinister in [this] atmospheric thriller” (People) about a group of friends whose dream journey around the world on a yacht turns into a chilling nightmare when one of them disappears at sea.

Lana and her best friend Kitty leave home looking for freedom—and that’s exactly what they find when they are invited onto The Blue, a fifty-foot yacht making its way from the Philippines to New Zealand. Manned by a young crew of wanderers, The Blue is exactly the escape they are looking for and the two quickly fall under its spell, spending their days exploring remote islands, and their rum-filled nights relaxing on deck beneath the stars.

Yet paradise found can just as quickly become lost. Lana and Kitty begin to discover that they aren’t the only ones with secrets they’d rather run from than reveal. And when one of their new friends disappears overboard after an argument with the other crewmembers, the dark secrets that brought each of them aboard start to unravel.

Haunting and infused with spectacular detail, the latest novel by Lucy Clarke—whose writing has been hailed as “breathtaking” (Kirkus Reviews) and “exciting and mysterious” (Library Journal)—is a page-turning thriller filled with adventure, exotic locales, and high stakes.

Review
“Two girlhood friends join the laid-back crew of a yacht exploring idyllic islands. Smooth sailing? Ha! Lagoon swims and boozy nights turn sinister in an atmospheric thriller.” (People ("People Picks"))

“Vivid imagery, increasing tension, and smooth prose immerse the reader in the rhythm of the ocean and the isolation of life at sea. Fans of psychological suspense will be taken in by Clarke’s fast-paced and engrossing read.” (Library Journal)

“[An] intriguing tale of nautical misadventure... Clarke handles the joys, challenges, and chores of sailing with easy confidence and does just as fine a job with her misfit crew and their easily upset equilibrium.” (Publishers Weekly)

“Tense and atmospheric, THE BLUE begins as an exotic adventure and turns chilling as tragedy and secrets unfold on the open sea. Clarke vividly depicts the ocean voyage in this immersive tale—both the beauty of an idyllic escape and its descent into something more sinister.”— Laura McHugh, author of The Weight of Blood

"[Clarke] paints brilliant images of physical surroundings and takes readers on an emotional journey as she explores the fragile bonds that connect each crew member to the others. . . . The narrative is punctuated with interesting, unpredictable plot twists that keep coming until the final page." —Kirkus Reviews

"This is Clarke at her finest: thrilling plot, perfectly rendered scenery, and characters as real as your best friend—or your worst enemy. A spellbinding exploration of human nature, the bonds of family, and the beautiful mysteries of friendship and love, The Blue is a book worth staying up all night for.” (Marissa Stapley, author of Mating for Life)

The paintbrush slips from Lana’s fingers, turning through the air as it falls. It clatters to the floor at the foot of the easel, splattering tiny flecks of blue acrylic paint against her ankle.

Lana doesn’t glance down, doesn’t notice the spots of paint that decorate the small tattoo of a wing inked on her ankle. Her gaze remains fixed on the radio that sits on the windowsill, her fingers raised as if still holding the brush to the canvas. That silver box of metal and wires holds the entire sum of her concentration as she focuses on the voice of a news presenter.

“...has sunk a hundred nautical miles off the north coast of New Zealand. The yacht—The Blue—was believed to have left Fiji eight days ago with a crew of five on board, including two New Zealanders. A search-and-rescue operation has been launched from the Maritime Rescue Centre at the Bay of Islands. The Coast Guard has described the sea state as moderate with wind speeds of up to twenty knots.”

Lana blinks, struggling to absorb the information, as if it’s rain running off hard, scorched earth. Her gaze bores into the radio, willing it to disclose something more, but the newscaster has already moved on to the next story.

She turns on the spot, lifting a hand to her head. She feels the cool silk of her headscarf keeping her hair off her face. It has been eight months since she stepped from that yacht, her skin tanned, her feet bare, a backpack heaved onto her shoulders. She’d walked along the shoreline with dark hollows beneath her eyes and hadn’t looked back. She couldn’t.

As she turns, she catches sight of herself in the long mirror that leans against her apartment wall. She stares: her face has paled, and large green eyes glare back at her, wide with questions. Was Kitty still on board after all this time? Had she stayed even after Lana left? It’s possible that Kitty could have returned to England. Lana tries to picture her riding the Tube with a script in her hand, glossy dark hair loose over her shoulders, her lips painted red. But the image won’t form, not clearly. She knows that Kitty wouldn’t have left the yacht, because how could either of them go home after what’d happened?

It has been eight months since they’ve last seen each other—the longest time in their friendship they’ve ever spent apart. She thinks about Kitty’s e-mails still sitting unread in her in-box. At first, they came in thick and fast; then there were gaps—a few days, sometimes a week. Lana began imagining the patterns of the yacht as it sailed through remote island chains, wondering what was happening on board, who Kitty was spending her time with. Eventually, with her head too full of images, she stopped reading the e-mails. Stopped thinking about Kitty.

Now a beautiful memory gusts into her thoughts, bright as a kite. She and Kitty, eleven years old, sitting cross-legged on her bedroom floor braiding friendship bracelets. “This is yours,” Kitty had said, holding up a slim cotton bracelet woven with turquoise and yellow threads—Lana’s favorite colors. Kitty tied it firmly over Lana’s wrist, using her teeth to get the knot in exactly the right position. When Kitty pulled away, there was a small smear of strawberry lip gloss on the back of Lana’s wrist.

In return, Lana had braided a pink and white bracelet for Kitty, and the two of them had held their wrists side by side and made the promise, “Friends forever.”

Lana had worn her bracelet for eighteen months, until it had faded and frayed to a dishwater gray. It had eventually snapped in the bath, so she’d picked it out and dried it over the towel rail. Then she’d put it away in her memory box with the photo of her mother.

Friends forever, they’d agreed.

A guilty heat crawls across Lana’s skin as she thinks of that failed promise: she’s cut Kitty out of her life, like slicing a bowline and letting a boat drift out to the open ocean.

•  •  •

Lana waits desperately for another news bulletin. She needs to hear exactly what’s happening out on the water—whether the crew have made it to the life raft, whether any of them are injured—but the radio station is playing a soft rock song that comes strumming into her apartment. She paces to the windowsill and snaps off the radio.

She stays by the open window. Outside, the morning light is thin and hazy, a salt breeze drifting into the room. She pushes up onto her tiptoes, peering beyond the tree line to where she can glimpse the sea. It’s one of the reasons she agreed to rent the apartment, with its cracked wooden floorboards and noisy electric heaters that she has to huddle against in the depths of the New Zealand winter to feel any warmth.

Now that summer is on its way, she’s grateful for the wide windows that let the light flood in, as she sets up her easel in front of them so she can paint before work. She’s made a life of sorts here: she has a job, a place to live, an old car. Her days may not be filled with friends and laughter and noise as they once were, but perhaps it’s better this way.

Sometimes she thinks of her father back in England, in his tired terraced house, spending his evenings alone doing the crossword or watching the news. After all those years of riling against his quiet routines, the irony of how her life has taken on the same lonely rhythm as his hasn’t escaped her. She writes to him every couple of months—just brief letters to reassure him that she’s safe—but she never includes her address. She’s still not ready for that.

Lana arrived in New Zealand eight months ago now, stepping from the plane into the start of autumn, shivering in a sun-bleached cotton dress, her salt-matted hair loose over her shoulders. She’d had a backpack on her shoulders and $500 left of her savings.

She’d spent that first night in an Auckland hostel, lying on a bunk with her eyes closed, waiting to feel it sway and shudder. If someone had walked into her dorm, laid a hand on her shoulder, and asked, Are you okay? Has something happened? she would have told them—told them everything: about the canvas backpack thrown from the side of the yacht, drifting in the sea like a body; about how a horizon curves and wavers when there is no land to break it; about the red sarong pooled on the floor of the cabin, soft beneath Lana’s feet; about a kiss in a cave carved from limestone; about how you can look at your best friend and no longer recognize her. But no one had asked. And as the minutes had crept into hours, and the hours stretched through the night, Lana had pushed down each of those memories, sealing them off.

When dawn had arrived, she’d showered the salt from her skin, letting the water run long and hard, marveling at its seemingly endless supply. Then she’d pulled on her dress, followed by her backpack, and started to walk. The rubber V of her flip-flops rubbed between her toes; she’d been barefoot for weeks. She’d stopped at a sidewalk caf and ordered breakfast and a coffee. As she’d wolfed down a salty bacon-and-egg bagel, a car had pulled up with a surfboard strapped to its roof and a handwritten sign taped to the back window, reading FOR SALE, $500. Lana had gotten up from her table and asked the car’s owner, a young Spanish guy whose visa was expiring in two days’ time, if he’d take $300. He said if she dropped him at the airport first, she had a deal.

Afterwards, she’d driven north with no map, no plan, and no one sitting beside her. It had been odd to be behind the wheel of a car after so long, and she kept oversteering into bends, having grown accustomed to the yacht’s helm. The speed and smoothness of road travel unnerved her so much that she’d wound down all the windows to feel the wind against her face.

On that first drive across New Zealand, she’d passed serene dark lakes, endless undulating vineyards, and staggering hillsides, eventually arriving at the coast. That’s where she’d pulled up—on a gravel path that overlooked a bay. She’d parked facing the sea and watched as the waves rolled in, beaching themselves on the shore. When the sun had lowered itself into the sea, she’d climbed onto the backseat, pulled out her sleeping bag from the bottom of her backpack, and wriggled into it, lying with her neck cricked against the door.

If anyone had asked, Why New Zealand? she could have told them that she’d always wanted to travel here—but that would have been only part of the story.

The truth was, Lana had always known that the yacht was going to return here eventually—just as she’d known that New Zealand was where he was from. Perhaps she’d been waiting all these months because, no matter how hard she tried to forget, she still wasn’t ready to let go of The Blue.

The Blue: A Nautical Expedition of Adventure Intrigue and Tragedy...
By missmickee/bookreview
A spellbinding novel of the vastness of the ocean, a sailing expedition of a seven member crew on a 50 ft. yacht "The Blue" authored by Lucy Clarke.

On an extended holiday from England, Lana and her lifelong best friend Kitty were enjoying the tropics and beauty in the Philippines. Lana, upset with her father, was facing profound disappointment. Kitty's acting career never reached the success she had hoped for. Both women were looking for adventure as they attempted to avoid their troubles. Intrigued and impressed when they became acquainted with the crew of The Blue and visited the yacht, Lana and Kitty eagerly accepted the offer to join the fun loving crew. The voyage beginning in the Philippines would end in New Zealand, and take as long as 8 months, depending on the weather and daily covered nautical miles.

The wise experienced Skipper of The Blue, Aaron was a thoughtful and reserved man. Although all decisions were voted on by the crew, Aaron expected to maintain a reasonable order, his authority was followed without question. Relationships among crew members were forbidden to avoid strife and confusion. Lana and Denny attempted to honor all the rules and hid the desire and chemistry between them. When Lana and Denny went snorkeling before setting sail, someone was following and watching them. This was unnerving, Denny did not want to reveal his attraction of Lana to Aaron, as Lana wondered who was following them and why, she discussed the strange situation with Kitty.

It was necessary to sail before March 15th, Lana attempted to understand why so much seemingly important information wasn't shared openly among the crew. After the expedition began, the yacht was constantly monitored, crewmembers participating in a 24 hour rotating watch. After a week at sea, the crew had been drinking (spiked drinks) late into the night. The crew discovered a missing member the next day, no one knew what happened to him or why.
While it was true the missing man was on the yacht under shady circumstances he didn't deserve to go overboard (March 15th). Was this a possible suicide? The man was obviously troubled. Aaron had a prior volatile disagreement with him, there was some blood on the deck, yet no one witnessed what happened.. or, if they did, weren't saying. The grueling spotlight search through the water was unsuccessful, as Lana discovered clues in the missing man's notebooks. Lana also began to feel fear when Aaron suggested the yacht would be impounded for an unknown amount of time if the situation was investigated, their expedition would end. The crew was in shock and distraught over the tragedy, yet the majority voted not to report the incident to port authorities.

The story is narrated by Lana alternating between "then" and "now" as she recalled both past and current events that occurred before and after The Blue reportedly sank. Each crewmember understandably had their own private life stories, and some were more reluctant to share details then others. The Blue allowed crew members to escape the more unpleasant and mundane realities of life on land, in Lana's case she sought temporary escape from paternal betrayal. The sailing adventure connected these seven individuals in unforgettable intrigue, mystery that explored how fast and instant are changes from the human condition combined with the natural elements that forever impact a person's life.
Lucy Clarke is an acclaimed international novelist, previous novels include A Single Breath (2014), and The Sea Sisters (2013). Clarke lives in the UK. Many thanks to Simon & Schuster for this value priced e-novel for the purpose of review.

Good summer read!
By Janet K
I enjoyed this story because it's set at sea, easy, light reading, and a mystery. It is a well written storyline that builds the tension with every chapter. The ending explains all the puzzle pieces and I especially liked the epilogue. I recommend this book and would read more by this author.

If you liked "The Beach," you'll love this!
By A satisfied reader
I'm a big fan of "The Beach," and I've been looking for a fast-paced read like it for the summer, and this totally fit the bill. It's exciting, surprising...and it made me want to quit my job and go sail around the world! The writing is a step above, too. This has GOT to be made into a movie!

Challenging Times Demand Changing Approaches

As the world strives to go green and clean, the discipline of environmental science is poised to take center stage. Its components span many disciplines, subdisciplines, and specialties. Reflecting this, introductory courses are often taught by instructors trained in fields ranging from biology, chemistry, and physics to philosophy and political science. The next generation of environmental scientists, professionals, and decision makers need an understanding of environmental issues that is not only cohesive, but firmly based in science. They need environmental literacy.

Why Another Text on Environmental Science?

Exploiting the fertile ground provided by young and open minds, The Environment: Science, Issues, and Solutions employs a back-to-basics, building-block presentation. The authors’ approach is strongly grounded in science, the scientific method, and environmental evidence. They introduce the principles of ecology, then discuss how the increase in human population, expanded technology use, and unprecedented economic development and growth has altered ecosystems resulting in serious local, regional, and global environmental problems. The book makes a case for seeking long-term solutions for the prevention and mitigation of environmental problems in their interconnected, interrelated, and, thus, interdependent ways.

Fully Integrated Text Rigorously Explores Environmental Issues

The authors’ engaging style piques the interest of students, challenges their critical abilities, and fosters environmental literacy based on a fundamental understanding of the systems of the natural world. The authors emphasize the basics of ecology and use this foundation to build an understanding of major environmental problems and explore methods of mitigating what has been degraded or destroyed. In a logical progression, they provide an understanding of the science, a delineation of the human population and technological growth that has led to environmental issues, and an exploration of solutions to those problems.
