About the Author

Chris Clarkson is a Professor of Law at the University of Leicester. In addition to his conflict of laws book published by OUP, he has written several books on criminal law. In 2002 he was appointed as the National Expert for England and Wales to compile a report on the conflict of law rules on matrimonial property for an EU Commission-funded project and in 2007 was commissioned by the Ministry of Justice to adivse the UK Government on its response to the EU Green Paper on Matrimonial Property. He has also acted as Specialist Advisor to the Home Affairs and Work and Pensions Committees of the House of Commons examining the Draft Corporate Manslaughter Bill.

Jonathan Hill is a Professor of Law at the University of Bristol; he was Head of the School in 2000-2003 and again in 2009-10. He has written extensively in the field of private international law. His works include Cross-Border Consumer Contracts (OUP, 2008) and numerous journal articles on topics ranging from choice of law in contract to the recognition of divorces under Irish law.

Finally - a useful book on relationships!

This is an amazingly easy to read book - it also provides analytical, well researched information on a problem that a lot of us struggle with - finding the right spouse.
I personally don't read many self-help books and get turned off by test-your-relationship quizzes, but surprisingly this book does a very good job of putting across well researched ideas about premarital indications for a good marriage. It seems to be based on solid research done by social scientists. I like the way the author potrays the book as the "Consumer Reports" for marriage preparation.
The part I liked best was the explanation of myths about marriage -some of them were common sense, but others were interesting revelations that can potentially help you see hidden shades of your relationship.
On the flip side, maybe there were too many quizzes and the author seems to make a big deal about premarital counselling, seeking the experts, etc. But, for a book on relationships, Jeffrey Larson provides a lot of useful information that one could use to choose a better spouse.
Overall, for those of us that like to give ourselves a better than even chance at a successful marriage - this is a $20 well spent.

Who Doesn't Know This Stuff, Already?

I found this book to be easy reading. Most of the research discussed comes as little surprise. It is quite obvious to this reader that disagreements over key issues such as whether or not to have children, the wife's role in the marriage, premarital sex, and so on, would be a compelling arguement not to get married. I found myself skipping over many of the tests because my partner and I have already discussed the issues presented and I didn't need to know where he stood on them or vice versa.
Anyone who would have the good sense to question whether or not they should make a lifetime committment to their partner would have the common sense to know that the issues brought forth in this book are important. For everyone else - the folks who marry with their eyes closed - this book would definately be a good guide.
This book is a worthwhile read if you have trouble broaching personal issues with your mate. Many of the subjects discussed could be considered controversial in some relationships. My boyfriend, an easy-going guy with an open minded approach to our relationship, thought the idea of cosmo-like tests to see if we were meant for eachother was a little lame. He played along :)

Excellent resource for important decision

While this book was recommended to me during a marital crisis (which led to my divorce), I consider the book's title to be somewhat misleading. It's intended audience is young couples considering _when_ to get married. It discusses many factors which are important for a successful (read "long-lived") marriage, especially issues that should be worked out before the wedding. It uses quantitative research to identify these factors.

While it was extremely helpful when helping me to understand why I was in the situation I found myself, it's real power became obvious to me when I recommended it to a friend. She was engaged to be married in a couple months and was getting a bad case of cold feet. It was clear to me that, while she had several legitimate concerns, it was not clear if the marriage should happen or not. She read the book, cover-to-cover, in about a week. She also managed to get her fiance to read it. After this, they decided that they were not ready to be married _but_ they would be some day (a key concept in the book - not ready now does not mean not ready ever). One year later, they married and, at last report, are still very happily married. They credit this book for clarifying their relationship and putting them on the right foot.

I should point out again that it focuses on young couples. It's advice, while still useful, tends to be a little too black and white for older couples. For example, it says that a person who is divorced is very unlikely to make a good marriage partner. While this may be true (and is almost assuredly true for a young person), it is not helpful information to a person who has been divorced or for an older person selecting a partner (the choices being a much younger person, a person who can't commit, a divorcee, and a person who lost their spouse).

I believe it is a must read for someone in their twenties getting married (along with "Good Marriages" - a must read for everyone entering a marriage). It is a useful read in your thirties. You have to pick and choose if you are older.

Esta es una historia muy linda, donde atrap� mi coraz�n la protagonista, que con su forma de ser me ha conmovido en varios momentos del relato. Harmony es diferente, insegura y llena de miedos por todo lo que ha pasado, pero no por eso menos fuerte. Hermosa novela donde la autora nos transporta, con descripciones tan precisas, al lugar de cada escena. De lectura r�pida, mantiene al lector atrapado y pendiente de lo que suceder�.

Not enough practical application of knowledge.

It's got a lot of lawyer speak but not a lot of advice or specific case studies. I was hoping to read it and have some ideas how to structurally set up my film's financial setup but I'm not any closer to doing that. This book does a REAL good job of scaring away investors in films and pretty much says that if you're an investor, don't bother because every contract is set up so that the director and producer will always make money and there will never be any for the investors.

Translated By Richard A. Schuchert; My book called A Life of Jesus may cause surprise for American readers when they discover an interpretation of Jesus somewhat at odds with the image they now possess.

About the Author
Shusaku Endo was born in Tokyo in 1923 and died in 1996. After his parents divorced, he and his mother converted to Catholicism a faith which is central to many of his tales. He is widely regarded as Japan's leading writer and has won all his country's major literary prizes, including the Akutagawa, the Noma, the Shincho, and the Tanizaki.

Speculative (non)fiction or heartfelt plea?

Apparently Shusaku Endo wrote "A Life of Jesus" in an attempt to better communicate the Christian faith to his countrymen. In his view the Japanese have not embraced Christianity because of the highly judgmental "paternal" aspects found in the Bible. As a remedy to that he tries to paint a picture of Jesus Christ the man, a simple character that unconditionally loved all whom he encountered. For the most part he succeeds and presents a comprehensive narrative that vividly describes the world Jesus lived in.

It's unforunate then that he should spend so much time trying to downplay the supernatural aspects of Jesus' life and Christianity in general. In conclusion he states that "the human condition is not to be curcumscribed by tangible facts" - yet for much of the book he tries on a number of admitedly speculative theories in an effort to rationalize events recounted in the synoptic texts. Considering that many Japanese people are comfortable with Buddhist concepts such as transmigration or Shinto ideas concerning ancestors and spirit worship it's hard to imagine that they would need pages and pages of exposition to arrive at the simple message "love your neighbour as you love yourself". Western critics are quick to point out that the Japanese are not religious simply because they don't practice in a fashion comparable to those in the West. While this may be true their acceptance of a supernatural realm cannot be argued. Why then does Endo spend so much time on this issue?

It almost seems as if he's trying to rationalize his own faith and gets sidetracked with his intended goal. Issues like the virgin birth, stating that Jesus was John the Baptist's "disciple", the feeding of 5000, the account of Lazarus and countless other literal interpretations do little to serve his ultimate goal. The most baffling apology of all is Endo's account of the resurrection which states that the disciples merely concocted this story out of guilt for selling out Jesus to the Sandhedrin. Again he further dilutes his message to embolden his narrative.

Harsh criticism aside, this book is very well written and paints a unique picture of the man Jesus Christ. If nothing else it's thought provoking and well paced. Considering the miniscule impact it seems to have had on Japanese society, Endo would probably consider this work a failure. On the whole though it's another voice and another opinion. Mallowcups for Shusaku

Shusaku Endo, in his own words a "solitary novelist in the Orient", has given us a singular gift in "A Life of Jesus." This novelist employed his talent to put a soundtrack and lighting to the gospels, complete with the dimensions of smell, taste, and touch. While I feel he used the word 'emaciated' one too many times in reference to Jesus, the point he makes is clear; Jesus was not what anyone expected a Messiah to be.
Endo takes a good portion of the book to explore the POV's of the disciples. His is the first account I have seen that presents a compassionate portrait of Judas Iscariot, a man who, in the end, hated himself to death. Toward the end of the book, Endo hammered the perplexing question of what changed the cowardly disciples, who had abandoned Jesus to his fate...the conclusion Endo reached did indeed resonate with this particular reader, though I could not help feel a bit of restless frustration with the end...his conclusions about the 'electrifying change' he saw in the disciples not once suggested the beginning of the book of Acts, where a once denying Peter is now empowered to not only hold forth, but to do so boldly.
The point Endo labors is more about the power of resurrection...he says "Regarding other miracles in the life of Jesus, the Gospel record is soft, compared to the resurrection." Indeed, it was fascinating to get inside the brains of Endo's disciples--the word 'resurrection' has new meaning for me.
I greatly admired this work, am still thinking about it, and had the feeling it ended too soon. In Endo's own words, because I cannot say it better, "Regarding those who deserted him, those who betrayed him, not a word of resentment came to his lips...he prayed for nothing but their salvation. That's the whole life of Jesus. It stands out clean and simple, like a single Chinese ideograph brushed on a blank sheet of paper. It was so clean and simple that no one could make sense of it, and not one could produce its like."

A Compelling Account

I would have never discovered this book had it not been tucked away in a box of books given to us by an elderly friend...Endo wrote this book in the 70s and it deserves to be revived in connection with the recent interest in "the Historical Jesus".
Endo provides a speculative historical account of the life of Jesus based on the New Testament. His attention to Scriptural detail is remarkable and he provides many compelling interpretations of the words of Jesus and the events of the gospels. His goal in writing this account was to explain Christianity to a Japanese culture that views a fathers as stern and judgemental figures. Hence, his challenge is to re-define God the Father as a loving and compassionate figure in contrast to the God often portrayed in the Old Testament. His thesis, in my own words, is that Jesus came not to tell everybody that He is God, but rather to tell us who God is. At a time in history when Jesus' countrymen were looking for a violent revolutionary to lead them from Roman occupation, Jesus was rejected as weak and ineffective. Only in dying with dignity and showing faith and forgiveness in his dying words were his followeres able to understand that his message was indeed revolutionary.
He is careful to distinguish "fact" from truth" and hence "A Life of Jesus" is convincing and historically plausible as well as faith inspiring. He never asks the reader to place blind faith in unprovable accounts of miraculous events. Nonetheless, he ends with his account of the resurrection which argues that the transformation in Jesus disciples after the crucifixion is as miraculous as the corporal resurrection of Jesus from the dead, regardless of whether or not such a resurrection is historically factual.
If this book were more well known, Endo would undoubtedly be attacked by evangelical conservatives for suggesting that acceptance of the factuality of the New Testament is not a prerequisite for faith. In fact, he doesn't even touch on the birth narratives because of the historical speciousness. His account may not convince skeptics to run out and join a church, but they may reconsider their notions of the meaning of Jesus and the nature of the Divine.

In The Ruby in the Smoke, Phillip Pullman combines three of my favorite things: young adult fiction, a good mystery and a Victorian era setting.

Sixteen-year-old Sally Lockhart has recently lost her father in a shipwreck. After receiving a mysterious note warning her to "beware of the Seven Blessings", she visits her late father's shipping firm in the hope that someone there can make sense of the note. When she asks one of her father's employees about the Seven Blessings, the man is so terrified that he dies of a heart attack right in front of Sally. And so begins a chain of events that will have Sally questioning the circumstances of her father's death as well as her connection to a priceless Indian ruby. All the while Sally is pursued by a series of villains who are determined to kill her before she can learn the truth.

The Ruby in the Smoke is filled with colorful, vivid characters that seem ready to leap off the page. Sally is a strong female character, but she's not perfect by any means. Pullman avoided the pitfall of turning her into an unrealistic super heroine, while still highlighting her cleverness and charm. Even some of the villains are likeable while still being villainous; I was very amused by one soft-hearted thug who gives a temperance tract to a drunken man he's just beaten up.

With witty dialogue and twists and turns on nearly every page, The Ruby in the Smoke is a delightful and exciting read. I highly recommended it to any reader who loves a good mystery.

Quality Mystery for Young Adults/Pre-teens

Pullman's 'Ruby in the Smoke' is an intriguing and gripping mystery for young adults or pre-teens. It is not quite as deep, tightly woven, or well-written as a few other books for this age group (notably, Harry Potter), but it still presents a quality read.

Sally Lockhart, a Victorian girl recently orphaned by a horrifying but mysterious accident, is the heroine of the book. She is a great character - strong and intelligent, but still believable for her age and era. Throughout the course of the book, Sally will attempt to find out how and why her father died, where the title ruby is, who is trying to cause her harm, and whom she can trust. The plot is very exciting, and pushes you to keep reading, and the characters are varied and believable.

It should be noted that this is not a book for young children, as the plot often delves into the seedy side of London in the Victorian era, and many adult themes are present, including murder, greed, and drug use (opium), although NOTHING immoral is glorified in any respect.

I am eager to read the next book in the series and find out what happens to Sally and her companions! I highly recommend this for anyone who enjoyed Harry Potter or the Series of Unfortunate Events books. I also look forward to reading other Pullman books.

Way overpriced for what you get. Twenty two pages of vague stories then the rest of the book is comprised of poor quality photos of rocks. I learned nothing from this book except to not buy the other three volumes. Save you money. Thumbs down.

Overall this book covers the renal curriculum very well. There is an emphasis on theoretical knowledge but also some good practical clinical information present to aid the student on clinical placement. I found this book very easy to read and intuitive in the way each section follows. I would not change this formula.

I think the current system of ‘pull out’ boxes works well and too many types of boxes may overcomplicate. For me the mix is very good.

This is a very helpful book for revision of the complex renal and urinary systems. The book is full of diagrams, tables and flow charts which simplify learning of these difficult specialities. I feel that the basic sciences at the start of the book is more appropriate for the earlier years of medical school where I feel it would be useful for PBL cases, however, the book was also useful during my 4th year clinical attachment on the renal wards, where this book was a great revision tool.

A great series! Clearly written, great diagrams, lots of questions, great for revision. Easy to dip into and out of! A great overview of the Renal System!

A must have for all those in their clinical years and approaching finals!

The language used is very easy to understand. The content concentrates on breadth rather than depth is therefore useful for revision……the diagrams are very clear and concise, often explaining the concepts better than the texts. Also the little ‘pointer’ boxes attracted me to useful information. I particular liked the flow charts for diagnosis.

The different ways of testing knowledge in the self assessment section is very useful. Overall the book is very useful for revision purposes with clear, easy to understand text and diagrams with a substantial clinical section.

Never underestimate the importance of the kidney! At first glance, the renal system may not excite but this concise summary of a fairly complex system would make a useful addition to your collection of medical books. You will undoubtedly find yourself referring to this book time and again. It covers everything from the renin-angitoensin system to dialysis to prostate cancer. The book encompasses the anatomy, physiology and diseases of the renal and urinary systems in an easy to read format. Finally, as with all books in the Crash Course series, there is an extensive self-assessment section with MCQs and SAQs.
