If you have found a mantis or egg case (ootheca) outside, or if you have been fascinated by a friend's captive mantids and decided to keep some yourself, "Praying Mantids" will take you through every step of housing, raising and mating your new pets. If you already own a few species, this book will help you overcome any problems you may have encountered and make your husbandry more efficient; it contains, for example, an excellent section on the selection and raising of live foods. This is a new edition of this little (44pp) paperback, and has two pages of excellent color plates added. I strongly recommend it to any mantid hobbyist.
One reviewer notes that it doesn't detail the care of tropical species, but that is because the care for all mantids is basically the same. Exceptions and details about non-domestic species are discussed in the nine-page chapter on Exotic Mantids.
The first author, Orin McMonigle, is well known in the hobby and a moderator of the online Mantid Forum, the most authoritative American source of mantid lore on the Internet. Buy the book; visit the site!

Moderately useful. Poor construction, lots of dismal black and white photos and drawings. It's a staple reference for people who keep mantids, but I don't find it so useful.

Incredible creatures . . .

I ordered this book just prior to purchasing one of the more exotic mantids . . . commonly called the "devil mantis". The name is incredibly appropriate based on the creature's looks and menacing posturing. It is however, like all the many species of mantids, completely harmless . . . unless you happen to be a bug, or for that matter, any creature smaller than it . . . or in some cases, not a whole lot bigger than it (there is video on YouTube of one capturing a hummingbird).

I have always been fascinated by the praying mantis, and had no idea how many different species there were until "stumbling" into some info online. This is a creature which seems quite unique in the insect world. I have no idea whether there is any substance to this, but it appears to have an "intelligence" greater than that seen in the insect world in general. It will watch you (moving its head about), as you watch it, and it will put on a somewhat unnerving threat display if you put your finger close to it. Amazingly, after a fairly short while, it gets to "know" you, and drops the threat, and will crawl up on your finger . . . intelligence?

This book is quite informative on an amazing creature. The only reason I didn't give it five stars is because it is a little pricey for its limited size. On the other hand, I would still recommend it because in searching around, there doesn't seem to be a great deal of published information on this fascinating member of the insect world.

About the Author

Dr Andrew Webb is Medical Director at UCL Hospitals and Consultant Physician in Critical Care Medicine. As a medical director his role is unusual in that it includes the executive and operational director responsibility for University College Hospital including the divisions of Critical Care & Theatres, Emergency Services, Medicines & Therapies, Pathology, Outpatients & Imaging and Surgery. He has been a Consultant in critical care medicine since 1989 and was Honorary Treasurer for the ICS during 2000-2003. He is currently chair of the Critical Care Advisory Committee for the Welsh Assembly Government. He has interests in haemodynamic monitoring, fluid management and healthcare management. He is co-author of several major critical care texts and papers on fluid management in ICU and the peri-operative period.
Mervyn Singer is Professor of Intensive Care Medicine at University College London. He has published numerous books, reviews, chapters and original research publications in critical and acute medicine, and led single- and multi-centre clinical trials. His research interests include the pathophysiology and management of sepsis and multi-organ failure, shock states, tissue oxygenation, infection, haemodynamics and haemodynamic monitoring.

Histamine is an important mediator of allergic diseases such as hay fever and bronchial asthma, food allergies, urticaria, and drug hypersensitivity. Knowledge of histamine as a cause of numerous non-allergic symptoms and signs is, however, limited. In fact, histamine intolerance can be responsible for conditions as diverse as seasickness, headaches and migraine, tachycardia, gastric disorders, diarrhea, intolerance to contrast media, parodontosis, period pains, nausea and vomiting in pregnancy, atopic dermatitis, and osteoporosis.

This book offers wide-ranging coverage of histamine intolerance. There is extensive background discussion of the origin of histamine, its content in food and alcoholic beverages, and intolerance to red wine. Diagnosis of histamine intolerance is explained, and the various symptoms of histamine intolerance are clearly described. Subsequent chapters cover the conditions mentioned above and also consider the relation of histamine to vitamin B6 and the specific immunotherapy of allergies.

About the Author
After gaining his MD from the School of Medicine, University of Vienna, in 1970, Dr. Reinhart Jarisch undertook clinical traineeships in Denmark and the United States and postgraduate training at the Department of Dermatology, University of Vienna. He was appointed Assistant Professor in 1980, and from then until 2011 was Head of the Floridsdorf Allergy Center. In 2005, he was appointed Extraordinary Professor by the University of Vienna. Dr. Jarisch has served as Head of the Committee for Clinical Allergology of the Austrian Society of Allergology and Immunology (�GAI). He is the recipient of five medical awards, including the Clemens of Pirquet Medal from �GAI for life-time achievements in allergology. Dr. Jarisch holds three patents and is the author of 139 articles in peer-reviewed journals as well as the book Histamin-Intoleranz, Histamin und Seekrankheit (Histamine Intolerance, Histamine and Seasickness), now in its third edition.

Very informative

Let me just say that getting started in tax lien investing has until now, been very frustrating. Both my wife and I are very eager to learn and while there is a lot of information on the net, most of the information is "controlled" by the gurus. They will lure you in by promising riches and free webinars that are designed to gain your trust. Once they have that...... you may as well give them your credit card because they have made you dependent on them and it will cost you thousands! Many of you know what I'm talking about.

Luckily I stumbled on to John Fadil's website called taxlieninvestingpro.com and it changed our minds.... that this entire tax lien thing is not just a get rich quick scheme. There you will find easy to understand, honest and meaningful information. Not like the gurus that just talk in circles promising the world.

This small book by John Fadil was a breath of fresh air and answered more question in a few minutes than watching many, many hours of free webinars and reading countless hours of the guru's same old stuff on the internet. I would say that if you are interested in purchasing tax liens, not just in Florida but anywhere, this book is a great read, very informative and all with no BS. If you want even more information, visit his site. I'll bet you'll say, "ahh, this is what I was looking for"!

If you already have a good idea of how to invest in tax sales, don't bother with this book. It gives very general information and contains no actual useful information if you are already slightly informed. It gives you tips like, "You can find tax delinquent properties listed online..." Well i think we all know that much but where? Honestly your best bet is to go to the county websites and look there and if they don't have a list, go ahead and call them. Now that you've read my review you can skip the book...

And we can understand in these terms the unified focus of the arguments at the conclusion of Hegel's Science of Logic. Hegel defends, first, his general claim that the reasons which explain things are always found in immanent concepts, universals or kinds. And he will argue from here to conclusions which are distinctive in being metaphysically ambitious yet surprisingly distant from any form of metaphysical foundationalism, whether scientistic, theological, or otherwise. Hegel's project, then, turns out neither Kantian nor Spinozist, but more distinctively his own. Finally, we can still learn a great deal from Hegel about ongoing philosophical debates concerning everything from metaphysics, to the philosophy of science, and all the way to the nature of philosophy itself.

from mechanism to life

Essentially this book is an explanation of the transitions in Hegel's Science of Logic from Mechanism to the internal teleology of Life.

The book is in two parts. The first part is in three chapters dealing with mechanism, empiricism and teleology. In the 18th century, before the developments of modern chemistry and electro-magnetic theory, I believe mechanism and empiricism were a big deal. Certainly Hegel is very much opposed to them. Today, perhaps, arguments against these are fairly tedious. But the real pay-off here is that all this leads to the chapter on teleology.

Krienes gives a very clear and understandable account of Kant's view of teleology and the inner teleology of organisms from the third Critique. He then very clearly shows how Hegel's view of teleology is both rooted in and a correction of Kant's view on the matter.

The second part of the book is, essentially, a repetition of the argument of the first part but at a higher level. Rather than dealing with Hegel and his relation to Kant in regard to teleology, this second part deals with Hegel and his relation to Kant in regard to the metaphysics of reason. And while the first argument goes from mechanism in general to Hegel's view of teleology, the second argument goes from the Mechanism chapter of the SL (by way of Chemism and Teleology) to the immediate form of the Idea in Life (and then beyond to the Absolute Idea).

The second argument begins with a consideration of Kant's dialectic of reason from the first Critique, showing how reason's concern for complete understanding (in the three Ideas of Reason: the psychological, cosmological and theological) necessarily leads to contradictions. Kreines then very clearly shows how Hegel's metaphysics of reason is both rooted in and a correction of Kant's dialectic of reason.

So, then, we come to the heart of the book which is an explanation of the Object section of the SL and its transition to Life and the Idea. This explanation is so clear and compelling that it really jumps right off the page. This is, as far as I know, the best account available of the Object (Mechanism, Chemism, Teleology) and its transition to Life as the immediate form of the Idea. This is highly recommended for students of Hegel's SL without question.

Then, further, Kreines explains that Life, although fully comprehensible in itself, is not fully comprehensible to itself. So this requires the transition to Spirit (in its logical form, first, as cognition). I was happy to see, in this regard, that Kreines gives credit to Marcuse's great book: _Hegel's Ontology and the Theory of Historicity_ (1932; ET 1987). Four times from page 204 to page 251 he mentions something like: "In approaching 'the idea' via life, I share a general strategy with Marcuse". In many ways this book by Kreines, with its exposition of the Object, can be seen as setting the stage for Marcuse's book. And it might also be seen as following Winfield's account of the SL which provides, as far as I know, the best account of the Concept, the section that immediately precedes the section on the Object.

If, between the three of them, the books by Winfield, Kreines, and Marcuse provide a quite comprehensive account of the doctrine of the concept and at a quite high level, still there is very likely the need for a fourth book as well. Namely, there is the need for a definitive account of the Absolute Idea, and the Absolute Idea especially in its relation, not only to Life, but also to the two forms of Cognition as well.

There's always room for one more on this affable witch's broomstick... or is there? In another mild-mannered tale from the creators of the Smarties Prize-winning picture book, The Gruffalo, a witch and her happily purring cat fly through the wind on their broomstick, without a care in the world, until the witch's black hat blows away. In the process of retrieving it, they pick up another passenger, a polite and helpful dog. All goes well until the witch's hair bow flies off. And then her wand. And then real disaster strikes--in the shape of a big red dragon, a broken broom, and some very important (but notably absent) friends. Julia Donaldson's story, though not earthshaking in plot or rhyme, is a pleasant way to pass the time leading up to the witching hour (Halloween!) especially when paired with the friendly illustrations by Axel Scheffler. In this lightweight, witty story, helpful animals find "room on the broom" of a generous witch. At first, a striped cat accompanies the cheerful sorceress: "How the cat purred/ and how the witch grinned,/ As they sat on their broomstick/ and flew through the wind." Next, a spotted dog retrieves the witch's flyaway black hat and asks to come aboard. The three riders soon welcome a green parrot (who finds the witch's lost hair ribbon) and a frog (who rescues her wand from the bottom of a pond). When threatened by a dragon, the loyal animals form a "Brementown Musicians" chimera whose "terrible voice,/ when it started to speak,/ was a yowl and a growl/ and a croak and a shriek." The witch repays them by conjuring a cushier vehicle. Donaldson and Scheffler, previously paired for The Gruffalo, emphasize the airborne animals' contentment and evoke sympathy for the broom's driver. In Scheffler's comical panels and insets, the witch has a warty nose and lace-up boots, but wears a pleasant smile; Donaldson puts a spooky/silly spin on the folktale format. The metrical rhyme and goofy suspense aren't groundbreaking, but readers will likely find it refreshing to see a witch playing against type. Ages 4-8.

K-Gr 3-A witch and her cat pick up a dog, a bird, and a frog, and fly off on her broomstick. The frog jumps for joy, the broomstick snaps in two, the animals land in a bog, and a dragon captures the witch. What to do? As in the Grimms' "The Bremen Town Musicians," the animals, covered in mud, stand on each other and "yowl," "growl," "croak," and "shriek," scaring the dragon and saving the witch. All's well that ends well for the witch conjures up a super broom with seats for the cat and dog, a nest for the bird, and a pool for the frog. The story is in rhyme, bouncing merrily along, full of fun, and not at all scary. The illustrations are witty and wonderful. All the characters, even the dragon, have the same goofy grin and large, round eyes. Dressed in a purple skirt, red blouse, and black cape and hat, the witch, with a long, ginger braid, is more friendly than frightening. The image of the red dragon carrying her, passed out cold, is a hoot. And her cat is not the traditional black cat; it looks more like a baby tiger. The result is a surefire read-aloud hit.

After checking out this book from the library, my son was requesting it daily. We couldn't wait to add it to our personal library permanently, but when it arrived, the text was different from the version we had grown to love.

Instead of the adorable text:
"A witch with french fries tastes delicious to me!" and "Just this once I'll have witch WITHOUT fries!"
we found the unappetizing text:
"And you, witch, look like a good supper to me" and "He said, 'I won't let you go, do you think I'm a fool?'"

Say what?!

Others have experienced the same thing, so please go and look at a physical copy in a book store instead of ordering through Amazon if you want to be guaranteed the original (and far superior!) version.

This copy is going back to Amazon, and I've already talked to Barnes and Noble about getting the correct version. It's worth the extra 3 bucks. The original version gets a perfect 5 star rating, but we are completely disappointed in what Amazon shipped to us.

I seriously love this story. I actually saw it on Netflix first and thought it was so adorable and cute. So when I found out that it was actually a childrens book of course I jumped on my trusty Amazon and ordered one right away.

I ordered the board book because I have an 18 month old that just LOVES the sound of paper ripping so the paperback probably not a good idea for a couple more years. Book came undamaged and a perfect size for me to read to my toddler.

He loves to point out the kitty and the puppy, and we are working on 'frog' and 'bird'. Such an adorable friendship story! Good for your own children or to give as a gift for a child under the age of 8.

This is also the same author as The Gruffalo which is another wonderful story! Both book AND claymation stories recommended. If fact, anything from Julia Donaldson!

Order the BOARD BOOK! All the lines are correct in that version!

We had borrowed this book from our local library, and my autistic son loved it so much that he wanted me to read it every night. I decided we needed to find him a copy of his own. I saw some reviews that said that some of the lines had been changed. We got the board book and all the lines are correct. If you want a good copy of this book, order the board book, NOT the paperback or hardback!
