About the Author
J. Anthony (Tony) Seikel, Ph.D., is professor of communication sciences and disorders at Idaho State University in Pocatello, Idaho. His research interests center on the relationship of pathology to acoustics and perception, as well as improving pedagogy through technology. He has recently been studying the relationship between oromyofunctional disorders and oropharyngeal dysphagia. He earned his B.S. in Speech and Hearing from Phillips University, his M.A. in Speech Pathology from Wichita State University, and a Ph.D. in Speech and Hearing Science from the University of Kansas.

Douglas W. King, Ph.D., was a professor within the basic medical program at Washington State University until his death in 2001. He was greatly loved by his students and fellow faculty, and had set up a scholarship program in anatomy for students with diabetes.

David G. Drumright is a programmer and teacher in Spokane, Washington. He has taught electronics at numerous schools and has a background in speech-language pathology and audiology. His software includes the original ANIMA programs of this text, the new ANATESSE application, AUDIN software for audiology instruction, and several other instructional tools.

George A. Aschenbrenner, S.J., is the rector of the Jesuit community at the University of Scranton, Pennsylvania. He has been the director of the Jesuit Center for Spiritual Growth in Wernersville, Pennsylvania, and has worked with the Spiritual Exercises for over 20 years. He is also the author of a number of books, including�Quickening the Fire in Our Midst�(Loyola Press, 2002).

This small pamphlet gets to the heart of the Examen as Ignatius had intended it. The introduction and rationale are psychologically sound. The summary of the five parts of the Examen can be used on a daily basis as a guide and foundation to the regular practice of the Examen prayer.

This book focuses on imitating analyses that are based on variance by replacing variance with the GMD and its variants. In this way, the text showcases how almost everything that can be done with the variance as a measure of variability, can be replicated by using Gini. About the Author

Shlomo Yitzhaki received his B.A. in Economics and Statistics from The Hebrew University, and his M.A. in Economics Cum Laude and Ph.D. from The Hebrew University. He is currently Government Statistician at the Central Bureau of Statistics, Israel and Professor Emeritus, Dept. of Economics, at the Hebrew University, Jerusalem.� Shlomo Yitzhaki was the recipient of the annual prize of the Israeli Data Processing� Association in 1974 for the construction of a Tax Model. Besides significant public appointments with the Israeli government, he�was a consutant�at�the World Bank and held visiting scholar positions at Harvard University, Falk Institute, and the Hoover Institution.� Shlomo Yitzhaki has served on the board of many prominent economic journals including: Economics Bulletin, National Tax Journal, The Journal of Economic Inequality, Review of Income and Wealth, and European Journal of Political Economy.

Edna Schechtman received a B.Sc. in Mathematics and Statistics, Hebrew University of Jerusalem (1971); M.A. in Statistics, Hebrew university (1976); Ph.D. in Statistics, Ohio State University (1980). She is a professor of Statistics at Ben Gurion University, Israel. Her main research interests are in the field of measures based on the Gini index as well as in applied Statistics in various areas such as medicine, road safety, quality control and more. She published over 100 papers in the professional literature. Professor Schechtman was the president o

f the Israeli Statistical Association. She recently spent 6 months at Stern business school at NYU and one semester at the department of Statistics at Berkeley as a visiting scholar and is a frequent visitor of the department of Statistics at Texas A&M university.

These days, it seems like everyone's a Friend of Bill--Clinton's buddies from Arkansas are turning up in powerful White House positions faster than you can say "Whitewater." But make no mistake, British journalist Ambrose Evans-Pritchard is no F.O.B.: in the course of The Secret Life of Bill Clinton's 350-plus pages, he manages to connect the president to everything from 1997's Oklahoma City bombing to Arkansas's drug underworld to the mysterious death of White House aide and longtime Clinton friend Vince Foster, and, of course, to Paula Jones. According to Evans-Pritchard--who has reported for the London-based Spectator, Sunday Telegraph (where he served as Washington bureau chief), and Daily Telegraph newspapers--Clinton's "original sin" was the Waco incident, the FBI's much-criticized assault on the Branch Davidian community in Texas that led to the deaths of 76 people. From that point on, the author asserts, it was all downhill for the American people.

Evans-Pritchard's expos� of Arkansas's favorite son is indeed scathing: he documents the then-governor's drug use and consort with prostitutes (primarily in the company of ne'er-do-well brother Roger); innumerable lies to friends, staff members, and the people who empowered him; numerous infidelities; blackmail--the list goes on and on. Evans-Pritchard claims that, because he is not an American citizen, he is not "beholden to any political or financial interest in the United States," and he does not "hang on lips of official sources," nor does he "fear the loss of access in Washington, or the blackball of [his] profession"; in other words, he ain't afraid to call 'em like he sees 'em. And although many of his seemingly wild claims and accusations are substantiated by thorough notes and appendixes following the text (including copies of original FBI documents), you're never quite convinced of the author's theories. Whether or not you come to believe, as Evans-Pritchard does, that "Arkansas was a mini-Colombia within the United States, infested by narco-corruption"; that--because of William Jefferson Clinton--"you can sniff the pungent odors of decay in the American body politic"; that the president's "actions and character ... have engendered the most deadly terrorist movement in the industrialized world," you will most certainly be entertained and enlightened by the dirt this British muckraker has uncovered. You may not be an F.O.B., but after reading this book, you may not mind so much.

Evans-Pritchard is a journalist. He was Washington bureau chief for The Sunday Telegraph. He was Cambridge educated and recently returned to England to serve as The Daily Telegraph's roving European correspondent.

FINALLY, THE TRUTH

Am still reading this book, it is so detailed that you cannot read it as a novel, more like a textbook. The information, especially detailing the Oklahoma bombing incident is that it now makes more sense than when it happened. Media does not tell the whole story, just their "opinion" on what they "think" they know and publish it as "fact", they do not verify their stories, it's all what they "heard". People want to know and this book says it all. There is more to go in this book, but it is something that you must read slowly, underline certain text, so that you can remember and know what this country and the world is all about - very, very sad. This is one book that you don't just pick and start to read, you must be in a "certain" mood (for me any way) otherwise you will be wasting your time. It is definitely a book that I would recommend to be purchased - it is not gossip, everything in the book has been verified and is verifiable.

A Must Read book on the corruption/criminality of Bill Clinton - drugs, Jerry Parks, young girls, etc.

If you are a Clinton biographer, journalist or political junkie then read this book. It is excellent.

It makes you wonder - do sociopaths *always* climb to the top of the heap in politics and business? I personally don't think so, but after reading this it is a question worth asking.

Bill Clinton was not just being entertained by prostitutes with his brother Roger ... he, Roger and Dan Lasater were partying with HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS when Clinton was a married governor in his early 30's. I don't know what the age of consent is in Arkansas, but Clinton and Co. were getting pretty damn close.

Then there is the more important issue of wild Bill's involvement with CIA drug smuggling. Yes, Bill was involved in the coke trade in Mena, but he was doing it with the CIA, Bushes and Oliver North! That last part is not in this book but it needs to be.

Then there is the very suspicious murder of Jerry Parks. This is someone who the Clintons *really* may have murdered because Parks was in the drug trade with the Clintons. Parks was murdered on 9/26/93, a little over one year after Gennifer Flowers neighbor was beaten to a pulp, no doubt by Bill Clinton's state troopers.

Excellent book. Buy it!

Bill has very bad sinuses (a possible result of coke abuse), no doubt caused by his life as an out-of-control 1980's cokehead. Sharlene Wilson said that she once saw Bill so high on cocaine that he fell against the wall and SLID INTO A GARBAGE CAN!

Sharlene says:
"I watched Bill Clinton lean up against a brick wall. He must have had an adenoid problem because he casually stuck my tooter up his nose ... He was so messed up that night, he slid down the wall into a garbage can and just sat there like a complete idiot."

Sharlene says:
"I was, you know, the hostess with the mostess, the lady with the snow ... I'd serve drinks and lines of cocaine on a glass mirror." [p.262, The Secret Life]

Sharlene, who was once sexually intimate with drug dealers Roger Clinton and Dan Harmon, says she and her friends would go back to the Arkansas Governor's mansion and party until the early morning hours. Sharlene says:

"I thought it was the coolest thing in the world THAT WE HAD A GOVERNOR WHO GOT HIGH." [p.262, The Secret Life of Bill Clinton]

Jane Parks claims that in 1984, when she was the resident manager at the Vantage Point Apartments, she could hear parties in the unit next door where Bill, his brother Roger and druggie friend Dan Lasater held parties, did drugs and chased women, some as young as a 16 year old high school girl. Parks says she could hear all this through the walls. They were giving cocaine to high school girls! Witnesses report the ashtrays were filled with cocaine, supplied by Lasater. Patricia Anne Smith says "I was introduced to cocaine by Dan Lasater when I was 16 or 17 years old and a student at North Little Rock Old Main High School ... I was a virgin until two months after I met Dan Lasater. Lasater plied me with cocaine and gifts for sexual favors." [Insight on the News, 11-6-95]. Cokehead Gov. Bill was partying with other cokeheads and high school girls. Teenager Patty-Anne (back in the 80's) says that on several occasions she saw Gov. Bill use cocaine and Bill sure wasn't acting like a governor; she says "[Bill] was doing a line. It was just there on the table." [p.290, Secret Life of Bill Clinton].

It's time to take off the rose colored glasses and finally come to the realization that America is not the same country she was even 30 years ago. Corruption is running rampant in gov't circles. The worst part is that not only is the executive, and legislative branch corrupt, but the final check and balance; the judicial branch, is there as well. This book covers the Ok.city bombing, the Vince Foster murder; the Jerry Parks murder, the Mena,Ak scandal, and a small segment on Paula Jones. The author uses excellent metaphors as he describes the people and situations he ventures into. I find it interesting that some people would only talk to him because of his British accent. They felt he wasn't part of the "establishment". You will come to admire this author because he talks to people that have had their lives threatened, and visits places that are very dangerous.

The most fascinating aspect to me was the Oliver North contra operation was being run through Arkansas, where Clinton was governor. The author states," It suggests that the political rhetoric of the two parties in Washington is mere window dressing, while the real decisions are made in secret collusion without democratic accountability." This book has excellent information on Iran/Contra and will prove how much of a sham it was!

The epilogue in the book is only 2 pages, but what the author writes is profound. The final check and balance to good government is the average citizen. If he or she lives morally, and demands honest gov't; it can be achieved. If we as citizens of this country have become corrupt ourselves, then indeed there is no hope.

The Philosophy of Customary Law brings greater theoretical clarity to the often murky topic of custom by showing that custom must be analyzed into two more logically basic concepts: convention and habit. James Bernard Murphy explores the nature and significance of custom and customary law, and how conventions relate to habits in the four classic theories of Aristotle, Francisco Suarez, Jeremy Bentham, and James C. Carter. He establishes that customs are conventional habits and habitual conventions, and allows us to better grasp the many roles that custom plays in a legal system by offering a new foundation of understanding for these concepts.

About the Author

James B. Murphy is Professor of Government at Dartmouth College, where he teaches courses in jurisprudence and political philosophy. His research interests include: Aristotle, jurisprudence, semiotics, political economy, and the philosophy of education. He has received grants and fellowships from the N.E.H., the A.C.L.S., the Earhart Foundation, The Manhattan Institute and the Pew Charitable Trusts. He previously authored The Moral Economy of Labor: Aristotelian Themes in Economic Theory and The Philosophy of Positive Law. He co-edited, with Richard O. Brooks, Aristotle and Modern Law (2003), Augustine and Modern Law (2011), and Aquinas and Modern Law (2013). He has also co-edited with Amanda Perreau-Saussine, The Nature of Customary Law (2007). He has published scholarly articles in Political Theory, The Review of Politics, The Review of Metaphysics, Semiotica, The Thomist, The American Journal of Jurisprudence,The American Catholic Philosophical Quarterly, Revue Internationale de Philosophie, and Social Philosophy and Policy.

FASCINATING READ!

Did Ted Bundy commit murders that were never attributed to him? This book uses strong detail with even stronger evidence to make that exact case. It's obvious from the first paragraph that these guys have done their homework. This book is a must for the serious crime reader. You'll be hard pressed to put this down once you start reading it, so be prepared!

Great Job Tim - loved the book

I purchased this a while back as I heard and about it from Tim himself on the Bob and Tom radio show. Of course I had to run out to book store only to find out they did not have so ordered from Amazon and arrived within a couple days. And to my most appreciative surprise, Tim signed it. Thanks so much to all and Tim - the book was GREAT. You and Roger did a fantastic job and I would recommend to anyone who knew about this true story of crazy Ted Bundy. I remember it all well and reading about what you gents found.., wow ole Ted was indeed a monster.

In this marvelously fresh addition to the Enterprise series, Parks, author of the Booker-listed Europa and a literary observer of modern Italian life, turns to Florence and to a particularly compelling contradiction. The spirit of capitalist enterprise that fostered cultural originality and underpinned patronage was accompanied by a Christian conviction that money was a source of evil and that usury was a damnable spiritual offense. In the space where this cultural conflict plays out, sometimes as stylized as one of Lorenzo Il Magnifico's tournaments, sometimes as life-threateningly fiery as Savonarola's sermons against worldly vanities, we find a world both akin to our own and almost incomprehensibly distant. Parks is a clear-eyed guide to the ambiguities of Florentine culture, equally attentive to the intricacies of international exchange rates, the spiritual neurosis about unearned income, the shocking bawdiness of Lorenzo's carnival songs and the realpolitik of 15th-century power. Parks displays a keen observance of people's complexities and malleable motives in this account of the fabled Medici dynasty of Renaissance Florence spanning 1397-1494. The Medicis rise in banking and dissipate as succeeding generations neglect the ledger book and devote themselves to art and politics; indeed, one of the last Medicis, Lorenzo, dubbed the Magnificent, should have been called the Bankrupt. Parks effects a worldly, shoulder-shrugging tone to his descriptions of passing subterfuges as the Medicis maneuver through the snake-pit of fifteenth-century Italy. Their prime problem was the church's prohibition of usury, but the Medicis' acumen in circumventing sin created a second dilemma--warding off political poaching of their fortune, which they surmounted by taking over the Florentine republic through chicanery. As rulers, they inherit a third difficulty: Florence's survival in international politics. But the Medicis come to grief in a French invasion. A well-written history book (for a change)!

The focus of the book is the rise, and fall, of the Medici bank, rather than the Medici themselves. However, the former explains a lot about the latter. It takes you through the founding of the business, as a not-wholly reputable business conducted by merchants and sailing very close to the winds of usury, to the over-stretching of the bank and its demise. However, by this time, the Medici had become indispensible to the financing of wars, which had enabled them to become politically very powerful. Ironically, they could now afford to neglect the very business that had initially been responsible for their power and concentrate on dynastic marriages among the nobility of Europe (by the sixteenth century, Marie and then Catherine de Medici had become queens of France).

Along the way, the reader is introduced to the scions of the Medici family, including the two best known, Cosimo (also styled pater patriae) and Lorenzo (il magnifico) and something about their patronage of the arts at the time of the Italian renaissance. Concentrating on the running of the bank, the book has fascinating insights, such the significance of natural cash imbalances in different parts of the banking empire and what thet meant for the business when it was highly risky to physically transport gold coin from one location to another in Europe.

Medici Money was well-written, easy to read and most enjoyable. Naturally, it was writen by an author, not a professional historian. Don't expect a dry, academic book with every statement footnoted to sources. Do expect the author to sometimes interject his opinions and to make statements without backing them up (we just have to trust that he has done his research thoroughly). That's a trade-off, of course, but one I would like to see occur more frequently. The non-specialist reader may well learn more about history in this way and, most importantly, be encouraged to explore history further.

A fascinating extended essay, not a history or a novel

Reading the other reviews, I see three camps. Reviewers who wanted a serious history disliked the book for being derivative, unprofessional and jumping around among topics without covering any of them well. Reviewers who wanted a straightforward story were annoyed by the literary language and complex narrative line. Reviewers who wanted a literary evocation of the life and times of the Medici Bank liked this book a lot.

I fall into the last camp. The author sets out financial, metaphysical and artistic threads and weaves the story of the Medici from them. Unlike the historian, however, he does not pick the threads that explain most of the story, instead he picks the threads of most relevance to a modern reader. He invites us, to the extent it is possible, to understand why the Medici did what they did, and why it mattered, and why those same choices still matter.

The first thread is the financial imbalance in Europe, with luxury goods flowing from the East, through Italy and north to Europe. Something, trade or money, had to flow the other direction. The imbalance was exacerbated by payments to the Church in Rome. There was not enough gold and silver available to do the job, and shipping it was too dangerous. The Medici bank made large profits for three generations by working out solutions.

At the same time, Humanism is gaining force in Italy and the Dominican Order is evolving some of the changes that will give birth to the Reformation (and cause some Medici discomfort in the person of Savonarola). Urban elites are growing in wealth and power at the expense of hereditary rulers, and inequality within urban centers is turning Republican systems to autocratic ones. War is constant, chaotic and relatively benign. The lines between war, religion, commerce and politics are not only blurred, they're non-existent.

These changes are stimulating, and being stimulated by, a revolution in Art. This is not just a change in styles but a new place for Art in the economy and in social consciousness. The Renaissance is only an external social movment, individuals have to reinvent themselves in relation to family, God and State.

The author takes us through this time of exhilaration and uncertainty with a novelist's pen. But this is not a novel, it is tied to the history of the Medici. As bankers and elite churchmen, extraordinary collectors and patrons (and at least in the case of Lorenzo, talented poets), skillful players of politics both civic and feudal and above all, masterful schemers; they are perfectly placed to feel the colliding forces that made modern Europe. The conflicts they exploited for wealth, power, acclaim and beauty are with us today.

This is a wonderful book, but difficult to categorize. I sympathize with the reviewers who were looking for something more conventional. But taken on its own terms, this is a five-star book.

Solid summary of the Medici story

Tim Parks once again demonstrates his ability to write an engaging story about things Italian. Following his revealing exploration of how soccer is played (on and off the field), he turns to an explanation of the rise and fall of the Medici banking dynasty. Bottom line: smart founders, arrogant successors, times change and one must change to survive. I have a better if not deeper understanding of Italy during the Renaissance. His final suggestion is correct: read Burckhardt's The Civilization of the Renaissance in Italy for a more thorough appreciation of our Italian forebears.
