A veteran astronaut weighs in on queries ranging from how the universe began to how to pee in a spacesuit. The hundreds of questions are grouped in broadly topical chapters but otherwise arranged in no particular order. They cover an astronaut's qualifications, training, and work; what it feels like to travel into space and to live there; the nature of the universe and our near-future prospects for exploring it. Jones draws on his experiences on four space shuttle flights between 1994 and 2001 for his answers, which are usually fairly lengthy, though he plainly leaves a few things out: if "NASA astronauts wait an average of five years between missions," why were his so much closer together? Will he ever go to space again? "Not if I want to stay married." Still, he often drills down to the nitty-gritty: what's in the International Space Station's tool kit? A long list, beginning with vise grips and including "a crowbar, a fiber optic boroscope, torque tip drivers." He doesn't trumpet personal opinions, but they can be found in lukewarm responses to questions about space camp and space tourism, as well as a cogent argument for continuing our exploration of the high frontier: "We will be struck again by an asteroid." About the Author
Tom Jones is a planetary scientist, space consultant, professional speaker, and veteran astronaut who completed four space shuttle missions and three spacewalks. Jones has authored six books, including Sky Walking: An Astronaut's Memoir, and he writes for aerospace magazines such as Air & Space Smithsonian, Aerospace America, Popular Mechanics, and The Planetary Report. A senior research scientist for IHMC, he appears regularly on television news as an expert commentator for space exploration and science stories.

Great for all levels of reading and curiosity!

My son declared that in 2040, he would be heading to Mars in the new Z-2 Spacesuit. I will take him at his word, as he is an incredibly curious and pretty intelligent 10 year old. When this book popped up, I jumped at the chance to grab it. I am so glad I did.

The sections are all question and answers. Each question is simple and one or two sentences. Each answer can be one or a few paragraphs. The photos sprinkled in are a nice break. The level of reading is perfect and simple, but not so simple that a kid that's 8-12 will be bored. If they truly want to know any of these things, they will be intrigued. The sections cover all aspects from Aspiring to Space, Training and Getting to Space, different ships, living and working in space, risks, returning from space and coming back to earth and a few more.

After devouring the first chapter about aspirations, education, and all things on how to become an astronaut, my son put the book down only to eat dinner. Then back to the book. He would stop reading and talked to us about space food. Then he would come later and talk to me about duct tape in space, using Russia as a space taxi of sorts and so on.

We looked up information on training at Johnson Space Center. We read up on old missions and names, astronauts and space ships. This book continues to lead us down a rabbit hole of information and we are enjoying the heck out of it. I highly recommend this book for younger kids that would enjoy hearing their parents read a little out loud here and there. For older kids who might not love to read, this book gives great opportunity to just pick up and put down at intervals, or read just a little a night.

The Recommended Age Range Should be 10 to Grandma!

Back in the late 60s or early 70s, I was a student majoring in Physics at California State University, Long Beach. A few astronauts came to the college to talk about the space program. There was a huge audience and everyone was spellbound. Although we were all brilliant and looking forward to the future, we seemed to be most interested in how they went to the bathroom. We all turned into fourth graders. I seem to remember something about a big ball of urine that broke free and floated around the cabin. I've Googled it, but can't seem to find anything specific about the incident during that era, but it's definitely etched in the folds of my brain.

So, when I was given the opportunity to review this book, I figured I'd skim through and then share it with some of my teenaged friends. Well, I'm not giving up this book. It is one of the most fascinating reads ever. Each chapter -- and, yes, there's a lot of information about peeing and pooping -- is incredibly entertaining and educational. Tom Jones shares his earliest memories of first becoming interested in the space program, through his studies and applications for the program, his experiences in space, information about other flights and programs, and the future. At no point does he talk down to the reader. There is enough science plus enough day-to-day information to engage anyone.

I sometimes wish I'd pursued a spot in the space program, but I get car sick -- when I'm driving -- so that probably would have been a bad idea.

I can't recommend this book highly enough. My title speaks my feelings. This book can be enjoyed by anyone from 10 to 100.

Good intro to anthropology, but intros can only do so much.

Metcalf's approach to anthropology is admirable because it consciously incorporates self-critical aspects I feel are important for anthropology novices to be aware of and understand. Many anthropology texts cover only in passing some of the inherent problems of the field, not giving, in my opinion, the proper impression that anthropology is currently a field in flux, one that is constantly in the process of reinventing itself. Metcalf establishes this clearly, covering thoroughly and repeatedly central themes like cultural relativism, the relationship between anthropology and imperialism, and the sticky issue of power relations between ethnographers and informants.

So four stars for taking this fresh approach, but negative 1 star for the style: I can't blame him, because he is treading the academic minefield of explaining complex issues in an introductory text, however, I really did think Metcalf erred on the side of simplicity on this one. Metcalf's text is critical of anthropology, and criticism of anthropological methods usually involes a call for a more complex, nuanced understanding of indigenous peoples/gender/sexuality/whatever. Yet, in the enthusiastic rush to elaborate this criticism in an introductory text, Metcalf often makes the types of generalizations that he claims anthropology should try to avoid. This mistake doesn't happen too much... but it certainly leaps out from the page at you when the last two paragraphs you read are exactly about the inadequacies and insidious malice of generalizing.

MAKE SURE THAT RACE AND CURRENT OPINIONS OF THE OBSERVER DON'T
INFLUENCE RESEARCH AND IMPRESSIONS OF OBSERVED GROUPS.
WHILE ADMIRABLE, IT DIDN'T REALLY TELL ME WHAT ANTHROPOLOGY IS.
IT ALSO SPENT A LOT OF TIME TELLING WHAT ANTHROPOLGISTS DID WRONG
IN THE PAST, WHEN INFLUENCED BY RACIAL AND "CURRENT CULTURE" ARROGANCE.
ALSO A LOT OF DESCRIPTION OF OF BASIC RESEARCH.

REALLY DIDN'T GIVE AN OVERVIEW OF ANTHROPOLOGY AT ALL, AND
COMING FROM A MATH/PHYCIS BACKGROUND THIS WAS WHAT I WANTED.

A monument to Lasker

Tal, Alekhine and Korchnoi loved him. Fischer, Larsen and Kasparov show considerably less regard. Soltis tries to convince us that the "good doctor" matters. To justify his thesis Soltis firmly believes that the best way is not to tell us, but show us. The 100 games are covered in 320 pages--80 more pages than he devoted to "Bobby Fischer Rediscovered." In his usual style Soltis sets the historical stage for each encounter and highlights those themes and critical points which reveal Lasker qua Lasker: His games are replete with calculated risk-taking, material sacrifices for positional gains, middlegame-to-endgame transitional skill, making the best practical moves, targets, subterfuge, insight into opponent's style, and complicating when the situation merits it.

During this exciting expose of a dynamic and resourceful genius, Soltis dispels some popular myths about Lasker the mesmerist, psychologist, sorcerer--early 20th century pseudo-intellectual nonsense which has clouded Lasker's real legacy. Lasker simply appeared to be ahead of his time and modern players will feel right at home studying his games.

Yes Lasker does matter - shame he didn't write much ...

Yes Lasker does matter - shame he didn't write much, but who needs to when this man held the world championship longer than anyone else - his legacy is his games! This man is the Muhammad Ali of chess - a real fighter! This man s/be part of every budding chess players education of past greats (up there with capi, rubi, ali and stieni). Even Fischer had to re-evaluate his past comments on Lasker and his importance, This man is the forerunner to counter-play and dynamics that is a part of modern chess today. This book is well written and researched. Respect!

Celebrated indie comic.....Spoiler free review

At last, a massive tome collecting this ambitious & ground breaking comic in it's entirety. I remember seeing ad's for this in the pages of Mirage Studios' Ninja Turtles comic back in the early 90's but sadly never got around to picking up any of the issues. It's very cool now to have the whole comic series collected into this handsome hardcover book especially since "The Puma Blues" has been out of print for almost 25 years & it's considered to be by many essential reading if you enjoy stuff like From Hell, DC's Vertigo imprint, or Barry Windsor Smith's Storyteller. Extra's include a forty page epilogue from creators Stephen Murphy & Michael Zulli, plus an afterword from Swamp Thing luminary Stephen R. Bissette. The artwork look's incredible & fortunately has been left intact in it's stark & moody black & white. I'd highly recommend picking yourself up a copy ASAP because once they're all gone it seems doubtful this'll be getting another edition in the near future. Fortunately this is now available in digital format through Comixology. Man it's a great time to be a comics fan :)

Great Collection/Great Comics

I gasped when I saw this Book on a store shelf I was so excited! Big fan of Murphy and Zullis separate and very different work with the Ninja Turtles and as another reviewer mentioned I remember seeing ads for this series back in the day. I've picked up a few individual issues out of quarter bins etc in the past few years and have been......very confused. Now that I am able to sit down and read the series in its entirety though I am......still very confused but in a good introspective kind of way. The Artwork is world class and mesmerizing......especially Zulli's wildlife. Murphy's prose can be foggy but I'm pretty sure that is intentional as the entire narrative is basically an existential journey.

The collection itself if pretty substantial with only a light (if any) reduction in size from original publication. My only complaint is that the first issue or so is ATROCIOUSLY lettered. I know that is how it was originally published but it was pretty distracting for the first bit.

Thank you to Dover for publishing this (and Jim Lawson's PALEO collection). They must have a soft spot for the old TMNT guys.

I Love It!

If you have an interest in The Environment, it is a must-read. Flying mantas! Pumas, herons, owls, and many more intricately drawn Zulli nature scenes. So happy to finally see a collected version, and with such a beautiful package. An embossed manta on the front cover under the dj! And, new additional work from two of my favorites! Admittedly, I am biased, for I was surprised to see my name in the Acknowledgements. Buy it! Read it! Enjoy it! Get The Blues!

About the Author
Felipe Correa is an architect and urbanist based in New York City (USA) and Quio (Ecuador). He is Associate Professor and Director of the Urban Design Program at the Harvard Graduate School of Design where he leads the South America Project research initiative. Correa is also co-founder of Somatic Collaborative, a research based design-practice, which focuses on a speculative approach to architecture and urbanism, and engages a wide host of material geographies and design procedures.

Ramiro Almeida is a Visiting Scholar at MIT Media Lab focusing his work at the intersection of cities + innovation + technology. He is a former Harvard University Loeb Fellow at the Graduate School of Design. He leads a wide variety of social entrepreneurship and innovation activities to improve the quality of life in cities. Almeida is also President and Founder of QUITOLAB, the first Urban Innovation Laboratory in Latin America, in collaboration with MIT Media Lab.

The best book on Quito and its urban form

A Line in the Andes provides a in-depth analysis of Quito and its relation to topography and urban growth. The value if the book is in its understanding and visualization of Quito and also in the drawing techniques embedded in the work. This book presents the kind of rigorous urban analysis and design strategies that cities need today.

Incredibly insightful view of the city of Quito, like no other book available. Highly Recomend it!!!

The level of in depth study of the historic core and the historic background on each chapter is impressive. Particularly the drawing of the historic core is like no other available, it reveals the footprints of the main historic buildings in the core of Quito and gives a new understanding of the street and plaza relationships of the historic core. The essay on Jones Oriozola and the findings it brings to the forefront are exceptional.
I highly recommend this book, no other book will reveal the urban history and morphology of Quito as in depth as this one does.

Working with or suffering from childhood sexual abuse? Read This.

If you are an abused child or a person who works with abused children, this book is a must. Nobody Loves Me begins by taking you on the author's own horrific experience of childhood abuse--an honest, open, and frank tale. The result of these earlier experiences included substance abuse and all that goes with that, recovery, and an amazing dedication to helping children and teens whom have experienced the same. The depth of what sexual abuse does to children and how it affects their lives is cover in great detail as Lynne tells her journey and the stories of many of these kids living in safe housing. But more, the effects of childhood abuse (sexual and otherwise) is strongly support by the quantitative analysis of her research. Beautiful written, impressive scientific methodology. I highly recommend this book.

About the Author
Ron Parker is an academic geologist who turned to sheep raising in 1976. He is former editor of the Minnesota Shepherd and recipient of the Distinguished Service Award from the Minnesota Lamb and Wool Growers. For more than a decade he has operated an internet mailing list, FiberNet, for fiber enthusiasts.

Best book for those contemplating raising sheep!

There are a lot of sheep books out there, but for beginner shepherds, I always recommend this clasic book. Many seasoned shepherds still refer to Ron's book for his solid information. First published in 1983, Ron Parker updated "The Sheep Book" in 2001, and it is better than ever.

Very helpful book, keep around during lambing season

Ron Parker's first edition of The Sheep Book is one that we have used for years, particularly during lambing season. He has some of the best tips that we've seen. The one caveat that I will offer is that the bottle feeding tips don't work with fast growing lambs. We followed them with our first bottle lambs and didn't get good growth results (although the lambs survived they were runts). More recently we've followed recommendations from a fellow shepherd who raises lots of bottle lambs and have given a lot heftier amount of milk replacer than Ron recommends or the milk replacer bags recommend. Our lambs are now growing like the ones on their own mamas. You do have to be careful how fast you increase the amounts. But overall I've learned a lot from Ron's book and we'd had sheep for a number of years before we got the book. I'm looking forward to the new edition.

A guide for the perplexed sheep farmer

In complete defiance of the wisdom of the ages, one of my friends stopped being a lawyer and started being a farmer. Other people had been leaving the farm for generations, to become lawyers. Not he.
After a lot of thought, he decided to use horses on his farm, not tractors. Old horses make new horses, but old tractors just wear out, he said. Then he decided to become a sheep farmer, because raising sheep takes less labor than almost any other kind of farming. Plus, old sheep make new sheep.
This is the book that taught him how to be a sheep farmer. Ten years later his old sheep are still making new sheep. Plus, he has a lot more stimulating companionship in his new job, he said.
Who could ask anything more from a book?
Watch for the new edition, due out in June, 2001. Yours can be a success story too.

About the Author

Entirely self-taught, Heston Blumenthal is the most progressive chef of his generation. Adventurous recipes for brave cooks!

When I saw Heston Blumenthal was putting out a "cooking at home" cookbook, I expected something in the vein of his Family Food book, full of waffle recipes and pictures of his kids. But this is not that at all. This is far the opposite direction. This book was made for the bold and adventurous home cooks, those who want to cook new and exciting and challenging dishes at home, but find cookbooks like the French Laundry Cookbook or the Big Fat Duck Cookbook to be impractical.

This book is (mostly) practical. There are some recipes that call for things I promise you don't have on hand. Some will call for sous vide equipment or dry ice or Glycerine. Some will require attention and time that may not really seem worth it. But the reality is that all of these dishes really, truly can be done at home. The most exciting part is the presence of several Fat Duck recipes that have been overtly simplified into practical recipes. Interspersed are various traditional and unique recipes (eg, prawn cocktail, or Quinoa sushi).

Each section (soup, salad, meat, etc) begins with a few pages of important information that delves into a bit of science (to be expected, and appreciated) that is of practical use to the home cook. These pages, along with the introductions to each recipe, make this cookbook one worth actually reading. There are tips on everything from how to dress lettuce greens and how to poach fish. It runs the gamut from soups and starters down through desserts and drinks.

For those who looked at the Fat Duck Cookbook and said "cool, but no thanks," this book is what you need. While for most home cooks there are still some recipes that are beyond reach, the majority are approachable. But the real target of this book may really be us professional cooks who love to ogle glitzy and expensive cookbooks, but never really cook out of them ourselves. This book is fantastic recipes that require a bit of skill but are going to have fantastic results.

Recommended despite some flaws

Most molecular gastronomy/modernist cuisine books are written for professional chefs. This book is different because it is targeted at slightly adventurous home cooks. So for most of us this should be your first cookbook by Blumenthal. Only if you like this book a lot you might consider The Fat Duck Cookbook, which showcases his restaurant dishes. Most recipes in the current book can be accomplished without any specific equipment. However, some recipes require sous-vide equipment, ice cream maker, smoker, or a NO2/CO2 siphon. If you are not interesting in getting at least some of these pieces of equipment, I don't think you should consider this book.

True to the type of food the author has done in the past we get modern takes on British dishes as well as some more general modern dishes (a bit of French and Italian, and a very slight touch of fusion in some cases).

The author wants the encourage the cook to be more scientific: Every ingredient is measured in great detail, but he also suggests that you could make changes to the measurements and write down the results. So try maybe five different combinations and then pick the best. This is off course outside the recipes, but it is the approach to cooking that the author would like to promote. The book also starts with an interesting chapter on taste and flavour. Most of us probably already knows about this, but what I like are the different experiments that the author recommends us to perform (e.g. take tonic water and gradually put salt into it and observe the changing tastes).

To be negative, I think the book feels a bit rushed. The writing is somewhat uneven. At times the book seems the product of a ghost writer and at other times the writing is much more specific so it must be the author's writing. I really dislike most ghost writing, because if the author is too busy to write the book, he is probably also too busy to put a lot of time into the content of the book. If you check the web you already see posts about some inaccuracies. (The book has been available in the UK for some months.) This is unacceptable for a book, in which the author makes a big song and dance number of using precise measurements. One example is how the author tells us to put spices in gin and then put it to boil to infuse the gin with the spices (p 383). Wouldn't it be better to heat it up to a degree lower than boiling? I am under the strong impression that boiling gin will remove the alcohol. (If this is wrong, the author could have made a comment, because I think most of us are afraid to boil alcohol!)

Still there are much worse examples of ghost writing so I don't think this should keep you away from buying the book. At other times the writing contains very useful bits of information. The author has for instance done a small experiment to see whether fresh mushrooms soak up water. Received wisdom has it that you should not wash fresh mushrooms because they soak up water. When he weighs the mushrooms after washing, he find that they have not gained any weight.

I give the book four stars. It is written by a top chef, but is targetted towards non-professionals. Since the author is self-taught his approach is also likely to stimulate the non-professionals to question established views and try out loads of experiment. The author wants you to trust your own senses.

UPDATE: Other choices? At the time of writing this was a great choice. It still is good, but I would recommend Modernist Cuisine at Home as your first book.

Finally, don't confuse this book with Adria's The Family Meal: Home Cooking with Ferran Adria. That book has 100% traditional dishes.

I love this book, but it's important to set expectations correctly. Heston Blumenthal is chef at The Fat Duck, consistently rated as one of the best restaurants in the world, known for its innovative cuisine. The title of this book is deceptive. When most people hear "(some chef) at Home" they assume it's home style dishes, probably with the complex ingredients and techniques toned down for the home cook who doesn't have a staff and an unlimited budget. This book is not like that. This is a book for the dedicated home cook, someone who will spend time tracking down hard to find ingredients or spending 4-6 hours cooking a chicken. It does require a lot of equipment, some of which can be rather expensive. Blumenthal does not really encourage you to be creative, to learn from his techniques and flavor profiles and find ways to incorporate them into your own kitchen. In short, it's not really an "at Home" style book.

Title aside, this book is fantastic. It takes home-style dishes, things like roast chicken, meat pies, chili, potato leek soup, and it elevates them. There's a reason roast chicken is such a well-recognized dish, and the recipe in this book will remind you of that reason. Roast potatoes are likewise a simple thing, but truly fantastic when executed properly. That is what this book is about, and it delivers. Those two dishes went over very well at a recent dinner. I haven't had the book long enough to cook all the recipes, but reading them over is pretty thrilling. The titles of dishes may sound plain, but reading through the recipes shows that there can be much more to a chili than just beef, beans, tomatoes and a spice packet. There are a lot of Heston-esque touches, like star anise to increase the umami notes in beefy dishes. If you've read any of this other books, this one will seem familiar. A lot of explanation and science is peppered throughout the recipes, explaining why things work the way they do or how he arrived at a particular dish/ingredient/technique.

Also worth keeping in mind that this is a British book, so you'll see some different dishes and metric measurements - do not be alarmed. For those who have a couple of his other books, you might see some similarities, especially when he gets to his rant about "sealing in the juices".

Overall, this is a very exciting book for someone who knows their way around the kitchen and wants to perfect their techniques and flavors, but it's not for everyone. As someone who has several of his other books, I was a little annoyed with the overlap between books - I'd like to get added value out of my loyalty, not repeat content.
